Windows 7 Won't Start up

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, which I recently bought with windows 7 already on it. It recently crashed, so I managed to use a Windows recovery disc to fix the problem. Last night when I shut it down, Windows update was installing an update.

I turned it on this morning and it gets stuck on the starting up screen. The windows emblem is animated as usual, but it gets stuck and eventually resets itself.

I've tried safe mode, but that also gets stuck on the loading file screen. The last driver to load is atipcie.sys.

Memory diagnostic showed no problems either.

I've also tried the repair disc, but it eventually gets stuck on a black screen, with only the cursor to be seen.

I have uni work on there that I really need to get on with, which I foolishly forgot to back up. Does anyone have any other ideas?

hi and welcome

If you cant boot normally, nor in safe mode, your options are limited. I wold suggest a repair install from the dvd.

failing that its re-install time. If you have enough space on the HD you might be able to shink the current partition and install another copy of win 7 to dual boot just so you can get at the data

Let us know if you need help

I didn't get a copy of the Windows 7 with my PC, it was already installed.... The HD is big enough, got about 300gb free I think. My main concern is getting my work off that I have lost. Is there any way to do that?

...and also, I can't run the repair disc as it doesn't load up properly, it just comes up with a black screen and cursor.

I have a spare external HD 250gb I believe (but I'd need to delete all my music off it). What would I need to do, most of my experience is through searching on google and I seem to do ok by following instructions.

Thanks for the quick replies - excellent website! Shame the same can't be said for my laptop.

Ok, I just made sure the laptop didn't automatically restart on failure - and I was left with the blue screen of death. "unmountable boot volume". Is there anything I can do - the laptopo is only a month old!

Hello Matt, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As a last resort, you could try doing a factory restore of Windows 7. The link below from Toshiba will help show you how to under the Using Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from the recovery partition section. It will format your hard drive and reinstall Windows 7 like it was the first day you turned the computer on.

How to use the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I'm unable to carry out the Toshiba HDD recover tool, as I can't get onto Windows to use the utility, and did not create a backup disc when the laptop was working

You should be able to from boot instead using the instructions under that section in red above though.

  1. If the computer is running, shut it down -- by clicking Start, Shut Down, and again Shut Down.
  2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard and then press the computers power switch. When the computer turns on, the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility screen will appear, presenting three options:

Depending on how recently you bought the computer, you might consider exchanging it for another new one.

Ok I managed to fix it - briefly. I changed the SATA controller mode to compatibility instead of AHCI in the BIOS setup.

But I reset the laptop, after backing up my important files, and now it have this error message;

File: windows\system32\config\system

Info: windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.

I've tried the recovery CD, but now I'm getting the same problem in that it will not load up.

Solution!

Hey mate, dont know if you've gotten it sorted yet, but i had the EXACT same problem as you, now this is what i did, and im not sure how it worked but it just kinda did, THANKS TO YOU! After i changed the SATA mode in bios, startup repair does its thing, and then it says to restart or shutdown, choose either of the two but at bios remember to change the SATA back to the original mode. Your laptop should start up fine. This is what i did, and THANKFULLY im using it right now. its going EXTREMELY slow though, even though it has 4gb of RAM, at least i can access all my files and back up them up, as now i wouldn't mind doing a factory reboot of the hard drive. Hope this helps.

why me and why isnt it working?

i have had the exact problem as described in the previous post above.
i have followed every detail exactly.
i get to the STARTUP REPAIR (specifcally "attempting repairs... repairing disk errors. this might take over an hour to complete.") and nothing happens after that except the little blue bar going from left to right as if something is going on behind the scene.
i let the repair run over night 8 hours - notta, same screen as when i left it.
i started it again, 10+ plus hours - same results.

what am i missing? i cant get thru STARTUP REPAIR! WHY? WHAT? and what congressman do i have to write to get this problem wiped from the face of the earth?
