Hello my fellow gamers and computer freaks,
I need recommendation for Windows 7.I am currently using Windows XP (32bit edition). My hardware is :
Phenom II x4 955 BE - overclocked to 3.8 GHz
Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3
4GB Kingston DDR3 in dualchannel (1666 MHz)
Asus EAH5750 Formula
WD 320GB HDD
...
So my question is: should I upgrade to Windows 7.
I need computer mostly for gaming.
If you say I should upgrade to Win7 please tell me exactly which version of it should I take (Home,Pro,Ultimate) and 32 or 64 bit.
Thanks in advance,
bl4ckb3rry

HELL YES UPGRADE! YOU WONT REGRET IT!

I'd get Pro 64... that way you can connect to a domain (if ever needed) Home cant. Also, there arent many reasons to go to Ultimate... multiple languages and bitlocker.

You might do better to ask on the forums for the games you play. You could also run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and see what it has to say.

Here, almost everyone will say go for it! I personally love Windows 7 but I'm not a gamer.

By all means run the advisor that ZTrucker has linked to.

Naturally, you can't upgrade from Win XP to Windows 7, you will need to do a "clean" install. ;)

Don't bother with OEM version!

Get Win 7 full version retail box (not upgrade) with 64bit + 32bit DVD's to choose from, plus you can transfer it to other computers or flog it on - you can't (legally) with an O.E.M licence!

Amazon in UK sell Win 7 Ultimate Full (version) retail box £150.00(ish) inc post!

Welcome to the forums.
Being part of the lunatic fringe gaming L33T puts you into Win7 64 bit and at least Professional.
If at all possible, shake down a student for a copy and use the extra money for a SSD drive.
Install a clean copy (preferably on a new SSD or HD) of Win7 64 bit and do the standard install/patch drill except networking. Read carefully on networking, following what seems logical may not work.

If you see a slight drop in gaming check out
Windows 7 Service Configurations by Black Viper
There is a lot to learn there but his "safe" settings work well and will return your gaming speed.

GPU BIOS flashing utils that worked in XP are not working for me. Making a DOS USB drive to boot from is best for flashing anyway.
All in all you want to do this.

It depends on a number of things...

First take a look at the various sub-forums here... note what problems people are having and how much time and effort goes into solving them. If any of these common problems is going to affect you in any serious way... you may want to wait.

Check your games support sites for compatibility issues... Win7's been around long enough that most should be resolved by now, but you never know... Win7's various compatibility modes adress a lot of the issues, but not all of them...

If you do choose to upgrade I'd suggest win7 professional as your minimum for gaming and networking features...

Jim :geek:

Well Jimbo, your starter for 1.
In the UK - due to quirky pricing, the Ultimate Retail "Upgrade" box costs more than the WIN 7 Ultimate Retail Full Version. ;)

2, As far as I know, when you use any "upgrade" version you are not allowed to use your old XP anymore due to the licence terms.
Therefore, if he wanted to use the XP for games which refuse to work on WIN 7 for any reason - he's wasted his money on buying the upgrade version!

EDIT PRICING >>>
Typical - 'they' just changed the prices on Amazon so the upgrade version is about a tenner less than the full retail version.

He is also unlikely to need Ultimate, Pro is sufficient. I'd avoid Home Premium as it does not have Group Policy Editor which is often one of the ways tweaking and repair is accomplished, or XP Mode.

Hi - in the UK the Win 7 Pro-fessional version @ present is only £10 cheaper than the full retail 'Ultimate' version (on Amazon)!

Wow you poor people in the UK, I say this because of the pricing and hardware available to you. We here in the US sometimes take for granted how good we have it. As far as upgrading to Seven I say why not, thing is he only has 4gb of ram so he will be able to use all of it which isn't that much more, but then Seven is lighter and faster if you ask me. Also might want to setup a VM for his games that won't play on Seven. Just my thoughts. Fabe
