Hello all,

Trying to recover my neighbors Gateway laptop, the laptop wont boot and i keep getting the bsod.

She thinks that the PC got a virus, but was not certain.

Used the Hiren's CD i was able to do some virus scans and managed to find the running OS Win 7 Home Premium SP1.. Wasn't able to find out whether it was 32 or 64 bits, but tried both, the repair was unsuccessful, tried to do do an upgrade in hope not to lose the files and just do an OS install without losing files, but it keeps failing.

If anyone knows tools tricks available please let me know, also do let me know if I'm wasting my time at this point and a clean wipe/ OS install in really my only option.

Thank you for reading my post.

First order of the day is to recover the user files. For that you can use any live Linux CD or my preferred little tool.
