Windows 8 Will Be the Beginning of the End for 7

To me it's a way of getting business and corporations off of XP-PRO. XP-PRO is slowing down sales of new operating systems. XP is also slowing down hardware and software sales.

I have no problem with MS releasing a new Windows every 3 years, as long as they standardize the core components of Windows like Apple has done with OS X. If MS is going to release a completely-changed-around, totally-reworked-from-the-ground-up version of Windows every 3 years, compatibility is going to become a nightmare and Windows will lose significant market share.

One thing that saw notice right off with 7 especially the 32bit flavor was it's backward support for games and other things that wouldn't run on the 32bit Vista being intended for XP or Legacy to XP. Even when the compatibility failed with the previous version 7 took on the challenge and -passed!

As for OEM manufacturers not providing ready support for Vista driver wise? One large grip years back was seen with 98 and the lack there of immediate driver support for those upgrading from 3.1, 3.11, 95 systems. It's nothing new but proved to be another setback for the then new larger version as far as Vista was concerned actually waiting until just before the 7 betas were out to finally see device drivers for Vista!

With 7 at least beta version driver sets have been available prior to the release date. MS pushed a little more for this since the "lack of" was seen too often with the previous versions on and off at times.

Welcome to SF! 775 Mike

What will be in W8 is what will be learned once actual facts about the next version are out! Anything now would be merely something to stuff a blog page with and nothing direct from MS this early.

It will be have to be something spectacular I can imagine due to the immediate liking to 7 seen widespread however! As you can see 7 won hearts over big time! :D

Surprizingly not all are Vista haters as some who have been running Vista since it's release were reluctant but now looking into 7! The driving force however is still the ""good word on 7" seen todate over what has been often negative reactions to any new version in the past besides Vista or ME.

Some many years back when first taking a look at 98SE I thought that the "bloated and slow" OS at the time until actually running it for 5yrs.! The initial reaction to XP took some time for people accustomed to Legacy versions and unacquainted with NTFS at first. Some skipped over XP entirely from 2000 to Vista and didn't mind one bit.

The new version plus the new hardwares and trend towards the 64bit Windows now that the support is finally being seen is another factor for the look at 7 too. Well it is the latest right when many are looking for that new edge as well as the large ad promotion! :D

True. There will always be a crowd of complainers because the fact is with such a large user base as Microsoft has, they can't please every single person. Additionally, there are almost always upgrade pains, 7 being a somewhat notable exception to the issue, but there are always some issues that happen and the general reluctance to upgrade initially. When XP came out, I remember many people telling me 98 SE was far better and faster and more compatible. They stuck to it until most programs required 2000 or XP.

I think that's what we'll slowly start seeing with XP. Microsoft is already going that direction in requiring Vista for Live Essentials V4 and hinted at it with Live Movie Maker initially in Live Essentials V3. As time goes on, the minimum requirement for programs will probably start becoming Vista with the Platform Update and XP will be completely phased out. Obviously that won't be this year but give it some more time and eventually, people will either have to upgrade or be forced to be left behind.

OK, this made me laugh. Standardize and Apple in the same sentence. You're joking, right. Apple doesn't have a clue what it means to be backwards compatible and maintaining standards.. You either upgrade to the latest OS or get left behind. It's amazing how much breaks after 2 versions. If you develop an app in 10.6, there is a very big possibility that it will have major problems running in 10.4. If I write an app in Win 7, I have no issues wondering if it will work in XP. Heck, I'm pretty sure it will run in Win 2k.

That's also why XP has had this long of extended life but will no longer being seeing anything new as far as updates. Commercial interests however see extended support until 2014.

Everyone has extended support for XP SP3 until 2014, not just businesses.

XP all the way for me. I have a fairly new machine and a fully licensed copy of Windows 7 but XP runs far better for me with many games, even the new ones. My newish sound card has issues with Vista and Win 7 and it isn't driver related nor is it faulty. It's also a very wide spread problem. Some of my games don't run properly or at all in Win 7, and like I said, even the newer ones run better for me in XP. No there is nothing wrong with my hardware or software.

So it is good that XP has got life left in it still. If Microsoft did it right to start with, it wouldn't be so bad. But now we have Vista and even Win 7 which just breaks so much, even a lot of newer and current stuff.

All good things must come to an end. Let's just hope Windows 8 (or whatever they decide to call it) is even better.

How new is your fairly new machine? If it has 4+ GB of RAM, then you're wasting it by using XP since it'll see at max about 3.25 GB of that, depending on your video card. If a lot of your games don't run properly in 7, it's probably because they're old, but even then, I've run some fairly old games (around 2000-2001 release date) on 7 with little to no trouble.

And no, Vista and 7 do not "break so much, even a lot of newer and current stuff". I don't know where you got that idea.

Games not running well in 7? You have to be kidding me! I have older Legacy to XP compatible games running on the 64bit 7! In fact that is the one software area where only some exceptions simply wouldn't be found to run even on Vista meant to for XP but found to run on the 32bit 7 there.

Obviously for some things to run on the 64bit Windows a 64bit version will be required. Sadly it took 7 to actually start seeing more 64bit versions of things written. Games however typically fair better since they have to reach a larger audience across versions while desltop programs may be glued to one or two there.

As for extended support XP Pro not Home sees a degree of that until 2014 since businesses tend to be found running that edition. For 7 the Enterprise and Professional editions see the extended support last longer for those two editions and will eventually leave the Starter(naturally), Home Premium, and Ultimate editions behind for a bit until that supports ends.

(gee and I bought Ultimate to be dropped off sooner then... )
