Looks like I will be sticking with Windows 7 Pro when I buy a
new computer. If I can find a 64 bit version by then.
This is a couple of years down the road.

The Metro is a piece of junk designed for kids.
Why does Microsoft perpetually keep on designing bad OSs?
Change is not always good. I know money........
Windows 8 for a programmer is utter nonsense.
My comments are intended to be constructive.

Don't get me wrong as Windows 7 is decent.

Windows 95 - nothing to really compare with
Windows 98 - more windowsish
Windows 2000 - haven't tried, but was very popular
Windows XP - they haven't thought that people like MS so much, they have added a whole new kind of interface
Windows Vista- they thought that they can do anything right - they were wrong, but they've created aero
Windows 7 - MS kicks ass after the failure of vista with the best performing os ever, improoved aero look
Windows 8 - ?

I have Windows 7 Pro 32-bit now. I know a 64-bit is available.
Don't need another computer at the present time. My
comments were intended for the future when they stop issuing
the Windows 7 operating system.

Yes, I am aware that Metro can be disabled but that doesn't
make for a smaller OS or one that is not running Metro in the
background and making the operation of the OS slower.

Check out what "Dedoimedo" has to say about Windows 8.

I don't know why running Metro would make the OS slower. Unused RAM = wasted RAM. It's not like the UI of Metro is slow either, as unappealing as it may be to those not using a touch screen.

OK - How about a version of Windows 8 without the Metro
code in it? Or like in the old days that gave you the ability
to select what you wanted in the OS. For EX: only English and
not 100 other langauages.

Can't give you exactly that, but here's a suggestion from one of our
Eight Forums members:

To disable the Metro GUI and keep the Ribbon, etc, simply rename c:\windows\system32\shsxs.dll to something else and reboot.

That makes sense. I suspect that they do not provide that for cost reasons (maintenance, packaging and testing)

I'm currently dual-booting Windows 7 and Windows 8 Development Preview.

Didn't like the Metro interface at all and I like touchscreens even less so I disabled Metro.

Very early days, but I think Windows 8 will be fine. Will I buy it? Not sure as I really do get on well with Windows 7 so I probably won't.

At my age, Windows 7 will probably outlast me!!

The beauty of buying a new OS is that no one is twisting your arm to get it, if you don't like something, don't buy it, just wait and get the next one, just like people stuck with XP until 7 came out.
