Windows Azure: The Cloud Is Inevitable

Just doesn't sound very safe to me. With all the data flow how do you protect it?
Cloud computing?? Via the internet???? Wait! That's it! Clouds....In the sky! Internet....The net

AAAAHHHHHH!!!! SKYNET!!!!!! Run for your lives!!!!
This is win.

I agree with the risks though I'm sure it will be touted as safer than conventional storage/usage but if I'm cautious to put up my music, pictures, financials, personal information then what in heavens name is it going to be good for?

And just imagine the people on the cloud who are horrible at managing their data and OS - I have been on countless machines that look like someone took a big ol' software shit on it - whatever bloatware you can think of, multiple versions of a program, data files from 1992, trial software, outdated drivers/AV, AOL and whatever crap you can think of....or will the cloud gladly keep it all clean a new for you?

how often will see we pop ups telling us to pay for the newest upgrade of certain software - I guarantee the vendors will increase these just like college textbook publishers forcing new editions every other semester.

and what about cloud clones(c)? Malware that redirects users to false clouds to collect data or lag/break data streams

I wouldn't want to be working for the IT department when this happens, there goes the jobs for fixing local issues with the OS and files.

I would really pray that hospitals and the like stay away from the cloud!! in 2008 I had surgery scheduled during a tropical storm one surgeon was scared to drive in it so canceled. Considering my surgery was done with a da Vinci Surgical System robot and that's connected to networks what would happen to the hospital if it was on the cloud and a major storm took out the connections? do people die?

see lots of security issues, lost jobs and TONS of law suits in the first few years if this really happens.

What I would love to see instead would be tablet computers, easily portable, power to do most computer tasks with internet access. granted these devices are starting to show up but not with the hardware and software most IT expect in a device at least IMO. We could all have GB or TB storage in small cards like ID that store personal files and can transfer to the device wirelessly or connected if the need arises. Apps could be rented for local use or purchased and stored locally.

The possibilities are endless and doesn't have to include having everything in data centers which could be the biggest target for terror attacks and if not physically protected could end up leaving large companies or an entire country without data.

they want our trust in the clouds and I was told as a young boy to keep my head out of the clouds and here on earth and I think I will heed that advice.

Fun aside I think it sounds dangerous. How do you protect your info, and who does the protecting? You have no way of knowing if anyone is watching. You have no way of knowing if your data is being stolen. Sounds like using wolves to guard the sheep.....YumYum!

I still thing security is many years behind when it comes to Cloud Computing. In Lee's post #14 As to security and other situations of this nature; this is being addressed at all levels, and as to what they have come up is yet unknown (at least from what I have been able to find on the subject to date). If this lovely lady can't find this kind of information on security of Cloud Computing I'm know I can't and that worries me.

But alias as with so much of our technologies we may have little input and eventually we'll all be drawn into the cloud. I'm just not seeing it at the moment, maybe if I took a flight up and could see the cloud from above?

exactly - social networks, p2p, file-sharing, and email are still exposed to nasty stuff - hell a denial of service attack could deny thousands of people just access to their OS

Make The Providers Liable

If the providers were liable for every problem that can occur (except for malware on your PC) they would soon stop pushing this.

This nonsense would vanish, if they got fined $1B every time your data:

  • Got corrupted
  • Was stolen
  • Was accessed/viewed without authorisation
  • Unavailable
Of course that isn't going to happen in the US (and as a result, nowhere else as well).

I was lucky enough to speak to Caspar Bowden Chief Privacy Adviser for Microsoft's Europe Division at a recent convention held by the Open Rights Group. I put this question to him:

With cloud computing being the "next big thing" how long do you think it will be before our data is no longer secure once it all gets onto a Microsoft server?"

although he didn't answer my question, I did get this out of him. "It depends on what context you mean it in, do you mean from hackers, the police, or others? Microsoft takes these concerns very seriously, Microsoft plan to set up several regional data centres, and if an individual or company asks for their data to only be stored in that centre then it will be."

Now to me, that sounds like Microsoft saying "To be perfectly honest, your data is going into the cloud whether you like it or not.
