The Windows Data backup does not include any overwrite feature. How can I setup a backup routine that doesn't run out of room?

Windows Backup does work, but since missing an overwrite feature the external hard drive eventually fills up overtime.

How did Windows intended for this to work if there's no overwrite or format features.

You can manage how your back-up is created. Go to Back-up and Restore> Click Manage Space >

To change the amount of space that is used by system image backups, under System image, click Change settings.
You can then choose to have Windows save older system image backups or just the most recent system image backup.

System image is NOT a file backup. Microsoft offers no way to restore individual files or folders when using a system image.

You can always mount the VHD of the image and pick the files from the mounted volume.
