Solved Windows Backup Restrore doesn't find image device

Hi

So I stupidly used windows backup to create an image of my drive (they should really tell you when it's a stupid idea to use the windows software right )
I re-partitioned, reformatted and reinstalled windows and now Backup won't see the external backup device.
If I share the device it is visible via the network but backup doesn't recognise any image in the image folder or any sub-folder.

Please help!

Some here swear by W7 backup, and know about shadow volumes - or whatever it is - and should be able to help.
I'm sure they can help you to get your image recognized.

I didn't actually have trouble accessing the image because W7 backup - image restore - wouldn't see the backup drive at all, although W7 backup had no problem seeing the drive to create the image in the first place! I've seen other threads here with this exact problem. I know windows utilities either work or are dodgy and wouldn't actually have risked using W7 backup except that I was told it was good.

Anyway, while I was trying to find a solution I read a thread where someone mentioned an app which can access W7 backup images so I used that and didn't bother with W7 backup any further, I wasted enough time trying to get it to work.

I had to make another image and used Macrium and I won't touch W7 backup again

This is an annoying problem on Windows 7 and 8 (and 8.1) systems. You create a system image on an external drive but when you boot from a Windows recovery disk, it claims no backup exists. Yet you can start a command prompt from the recovery disk and see the external drive is accessible and the image is there. The only solution ive found is to reinstall your OS and, once its booted, then you can restore the system image. This effectively makes Microsoft's recovery disk useless.
