Hi,

Does anyone know how to get the built in Windows Backup to produce a log file somewhere?

I currently have a daily backup setup and then i have also put some other scripts around it to send me an email when the backup starts and when it has finished however i would like the finished backup email to include a log file to tell me if it was successful or failed.

In order to do this i just need to be able create a simple text log file each time it is run?

Have you checked the Backup Log File? Double clicking the file will envoke the event viewer snapin.

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Microsoft-Windows-Backup.evtx

I have checked this however it shows as being successful even though i know the backup actually failed LOL.

On another note, i would need the report to be in a .txt format so i can use the text file as the body of the email that i am planning on sending.

What did you base this on? There's several codes used under the 100 and 101 Event IDs. These are just start and stop events, not "completion". You'll need to decode "hc_stateid" to determine why the Event ID was generated. Good luck with that--I've only been able to see that "0" is a success. I haven't delved into the other codes such as 2, 7, 10, 11, 17 but I'm sure these specify whether the Event is a backup, restore, image or image restore. This code is not documented anywhere in Microsoft's public data.

I haven't tried but there's an Email option in the Action Center under "Attach Task To This Event". Other than being able to Copy the events to a text file, the log data is written in XML. You'd have to convert that.

There's no other options available, that I know of, for tracking Backups. :(

Event viewer>Application & service logs>Windowslogs>Microsoft>Windows>....
Backup or Windows backup.

yes indeed - my mistake.

Under event viewer there are "Applications and services logs" (where I was pointing) and "Saved logs" where the evtx file seems to open up to.

I am very sorry to have not replied for 2 weeks.

This location is perfect for the event, now i just need to be able create a script to export that to a text file if that is even possible? :)

If someone knows please help but otherwise if i figure it out i will post back with the solution.
