Windows Boot Manager Very Slow

Hopefully someone can lead me in the right direction.

I have a dual partition pc that has Windows 7 and Windows XP on it. It had been running great for about 6 months.

The past couple of weeks though, when I turn the pc on it take Windows boot Manager a very long time to come up. Once I select the OS though it comes up pretty fast.

So the question is could my MBR be corrupted ? I understand that each OS has its own bootup script when you log in but how can I troubleshoot the Windows Boot Manager starting so slow ?

perhaps you can explain exactly what happens when you switch on? is the screen blank for a long time after it POST's but before the dual boot menu appears? or do you get any messages come up before the bootmanager appears?

you might want to try this: http://www.tomstricks.com/how-to-repair-and-restore-windows-vista-master-boot-record-mbr/ its for vista, but the win 7 and vista MBR are pretty much identical

I get my HP title screen which is normal but even that seems to stay on alot longer than normal now.

From there I get a blinking cursor that goes for probably around 2 minutes and then the Windows Boot Manager comes up really slow.

I get no messages or anything. Startup is normal except for how long it is taking now.

Once I select the OS and log in everything seems fine. It is just the boot manager that is taking forever.

well the links iv posted should let you fix the BCD if that is the issue, but i wonder if its something to do with your boot order, for instance, when i boot, it has up to 30 seconds to look for a DVD in the drive before it boots from HDD if the disk is damaged then it can take quite a while to realise its not bootable, could that be possible in your case?

of course there is always the Repair Install route, if it is an issue with the MBR that will sort it without wiping out your windows installation and files

Here is the setup.

Orginally this system had windows xp media center on it.

I partitioned the system so I could install windows 7.

I just read over the link you gave me for teh bootrec so would the MBR be on xp side since that was the first OS installed or Windows 7 ? It sounds to me like it would be on the XP partition.

Windows 7 should have taken over the MBR when you installed it, XP's bootloader wouldn't know what to do with 7,
