Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1

i have a sony PCVRS220. i replaced the original HD with a 1tb WD caviar black. i am installing win7 and i am up to the "where do you want to install win7" screen. but i get a message "Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1."

any help? thanks

no

and i forgot to add that i'm using a pata to sata adapter.

the win7 setup shows my 1 tb drive.

i am unable to format it..the "format" button is unclickable

Can you connect the pata to sata adapter to another computer that has an operating system on it ? & the new HD is a secondary HD & then pre-format it there first ?

the only other pc i have is my laptop...this a brand new drive from bestbuy

Do you have any options in the BIOS setup as to what type of HD's to select ?
Probably should be set to IDE for a pata to sata adapter.

If you are letting the installer partition and format the HD, then it will create a 100mb boot partition as PARTITION 1. If you want the 100mb boot partition (for dual booting, to place the Repair Console on F8 Advanced Boot Tools, etc) then create and format a second partition to install Win7 upon.

If you don't want the 100mb Sys Rserved partition, then change it's size to the size partition you want Win7 to be installed upon, format and install there.

So maybe your MB is not compatible with the pata to sata adapter.

What is the make & model of your MB ?

Is the new HDD PATA and the mobo connector SATA, if so how is the HDD jumpered, as master or slave?

I tried about a million and one things for this "Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1." error, and what finally did it was removing my new SATA DVD drive and hooking up an old IDE one.

Yes, my *DVD* drive, NOT my hard drive. Weird huh?

I fully expected to still get the error but evidently once the SATA bus was inactive (my hard drive is still an old IDE too) that fixed it (?) Just a guess.

Anyways, now running Win7x64 and loving it! (and yes, my new SATA DVD drive works there just fine)
