Hello all,

First off thanx for taking the time to read this post. I am having trouble with a clean install of windows 7. I d/l'ed an iso image of windows 7 prem. from off the web and burned it to a dvd. I then set my bios to load from cd/dvd and then went through the windows install process till you get to the partition part of it. I previously had 2 disk partitions on my hdd which I deleted hoping that they would get rid of the corrupted copy of windows I had installed.

after deleting the partitons I restarted my comp as it was running at an ungodly slow pace. when I then got back to the part where it asks where you would like to install windows there is now a message at the bottom of the page saying that I am not able to install windows to this disk. the exact message is "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that this disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I read in a post online that I should try and format a part of this unallocated space, but when I try and do that I get another error which says "error 0x80070017" not really sure what to do about this.

I have also tried to change my bios setting regarding the control mode to AHCI. not really what this does, but I changed it as I have seen other people posting it and saying it will help.

Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated and if you need any further information plz feel free to ask.

That error code normally appears when the integrity of the installation is not complete.

Where did you receive this image from? Did it fully download? I must insist that this site does not support nor allow any illegal material.

My comp came with windows 7 installed on it from cyberpowerpc.com the copy of windows 7 that came with it I have since lost. I still have the product key sticker on my tower and the only way to reinstall windows is from an iso image at least from my understanding. the site where I got my iso image is Download Windows 7 ISO - Official Direct Download Links looked like a decent site so I thought it would be a decent d/l. sorry for any confusion

thank you for the help guys. I went through and tried the posts that you recommended and it still doesn't help with me not being able to partition my hdd. I also went through and tried to partition it in the command prompt part of the repair tool and was unable to get anywhere with that.
if anyone else can help me with a way to get around these errors or something to help fix them this would be great thanx again for anyone willing to help.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

If install fails, try SATA controller set to IDE in BIOS setup. Test your HD using maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan followed by Disk Check run from installer Command Line.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

jeagers I like it when a plan comes together.
I find the expert and the expert finds you.
Happy computing

thanx for the help but im still having a problem when I try to create a new partition for my harddrive I get the following message error: data error (cyclic redundancy check)

now I have been looking at other posts online for a fix for this and everyone seems to be telling me to run a chkdsk /r to fix this problem. but the problem with this is that I need a partition to do a chkdsk for and when I have a whole hdd that is unallocated im not finding a way to do this so if you have any other ways of trying to fix the bad sector on my hdd this would be great im just running out of idea's right now.

also layback bear thanx again for all the help you have given me so far it ncie to know there are still decent people out there willing to help others.

side note-when I did the clean command it succeeded and there was no problems just can't seem to make a new partition which is driving me nuts

The step I gave you to run the HD maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan will tell you the condition of the HD. You can also use Partition Wizard bootable CD (burn ISO to CD with Windows Image Burner) Partition Wizard HD surface test folllowed by Partition Wizard Create Partition - Video Help

Did you clean the HD? Then when you tried Diskpart Create Partition Primary it gave the error? Make sure you have the exact command typed including the spacing.

Try Clean command again, close Command Box, click Install Now, try to create and format a partition at the Drive Selection Screen using Drive Options (Advanced) illustrated in Step 7 of Clean Install Windows 7, or just click Next to have the installer do it for you - what errors do you get with each of these attempts?

when I tried to make the new partition on my own I got the error:0x80070017 message. and when I just try and click the next button it says setup was unable to create a new system partition or location an existing system partition. I am currently tryin to d/l the file for checking my hd with the lick you gave me thank you again for the help

jeagers I would highly recommend NOT jumping from website to website.
You will only get confused.
If you are having a problem just post back and greg will be able to help you. If you start do thing from various sites no one will not be able to follow and help you; and I mean no one.

Which Diagnostics are you running? Most of them will repair a HD if at all possible. If not the most you can do is run the Wipe function which most of them also have. Then try using the Win7 installer to partition and format with the Drive Options in Step 7 of Clean Install Windows 7.

If that fails try every step in Post 6 again to see if it will format an Active partition. If not I think the HD is bad. You can confirm it with Partition Wizard surface test which you can also use to try to Create Partition - Partition Wizard Video Help

Then you'll know you've done everything possible and it's time to replace the HD.

im running the drive fitness test. I tried the option to just repair the bad sectors and received and message when it tried to just repair those now im going to try and run the test again and have it just erase the whole disk and rewrite the whole thing hopefully this works as I don't want to have to replace the hd.
