Windows Could Not Search For New Updates Error 8007002

Win 7 SP1 - Home Premium - 64bit - Dell - 8GB Ram

I'm working on fixing a friend's computer. I've resolved the BSOD problems and the WINWORD issues. But I cannot get it to update. I don't know if it has ever been updated, the CP and the Update screen both say they haven't, but I don't know how far to trust that.

I have ran System Update Readiness Tool, and the 50202 hotfix. The hotfix hasn't helped at all. Registering the Windows Update components has not helped. I've tried downloading some updates manually and running them, but I receive a message that these updates are not applicable to my system. And the sfc /scannow command returns this "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". This seems like a rare error code and situation, so I'm hoping I can get some outside input. I'm attaching my checksur.log as well.

Thanks for any help you can offer. I normally run Ubuntu, so I've forgotten how difficult MS can be sometimes.

Please let us know if you have tried to Rename the Windows Update Download Folder manually. If not then you can try performing the same by following the steps in the link below:

Error message when you use the Windows Update Web site or Microsoft Update Web site to install updates: "0x80070002"

From your CheckSUR results, you have a fair amount of registry corruption - possibly the result of bad hardware.

I would suggest a RAM test and a disk integrity check.



Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

Then run Memtest86+ (from www.memtest.org - follow their instructions, and run at least 3 full passes)
