I tried to use Windows Update by clicking [Check for updates] but then I receive this message:

I click [Install Now], it tries and then…

...a failure reporting Error 800706BA

I have tried the Microsoft Fixit diagnostic here: Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

These are the results it came back with:

And then after running it came back with this:

I've tried a bit of diagnosis of the issue myself, but keep coming back to this issue of not being able to update Windows Update!

Help would be appreciated as I have spent 2 days already on this.

Thanks.

Running sfc /scannow resulted in error

Hi. I followed the instructions, downloaded SURT and ran it.
I then ran the SFC scan which gave the result shown here:

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 7% complete.

Please follow the instructions fully!

The minimal data so far provided gives this for the failure of the SFC...

Please run a full CHKDSK scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC /SCANNOW again, and see if it completes properly this time.

Also - please check in diskmgmt.msc for the list of partitions on your hard drive - what are they listed as?

Post the FULL results - including CheckSUR.log and CBS.log files.

Check Disk Fixed it!

Thanks for your help. After the checkdisk ran (this took all night) it found a few bad files and fixed them. When the laptop re-started, all the updates kicked-off with no problem, and things seem to be OK now.:D

Thanks again for helping out with this.

You're welcome.
You should check the results of the CHKDSK command to make sure that it's not a failing disk.

Open Event Viewer, and navigate in the left pane to \Windows logs\Application
You should find the CHKDSK results as an event from source WININIT - you can either hunt for it, or use the Filter options.
If it says there are 'bad sectors' then think about replacing the hard drive.
