Windows, DOS, Batch-files, Powershell, geek stuff galore...

Snick, GoogleMyDrive's college cafe's Windows & DOS sent you an invite via general email :)
You are in, as far as I know, once you accept. PaulB, we are still waiting...for your email address :)

In here - sevenforums, and in college cafe Windows & DOS, we can give helpful hints about batch-files, powershell scripts, etc., whatsoever our brains and hearts desire!

Who knows, we just might actually help somebody other than ourselves!

I'm not familiar with GooHell Drive, but it looks like a bunch of files now rather than a website.

That is what it is, a collection of directories, with files within each directory. i plan to simply add to several existing boards and do not plan to begin another discussion board or a web site.

PaulB, Snick, I'm going to combine my Paul and Snick materials into one folder, one directory, to save space by combining like with like. One suggestion, if you have not already done so:
-- using "::" , put your name and email address at the top of each batch-file you create
-- for any config.sys or similar item, using "rem"[?], ditto name and email address
-- any EXE, DLL, COM, etc., embed name and email address
-- if you know author or authors, consider embedding their IDs within their stuff
I think it is best to simply ASCII flat text email addresses into your stuff.

If you browse my stuff in google/mydrive's geek stuff, you will see I took that advice for my concoctions.

And how should I know which files I can use if you've given most of them cryptic names? You're allowed up to 255 characters.

Example, pretend you added a batchfile from me into your geek pot publicized on sevenforums.
Your batchfiles and mine are branded with our respective names and email addresses.

I did put a special folder in Data called "PBlack + Snick" but I don't know what a geek pot is. I also have the installer for every program I run on my computers, in case I need to reinstall or set up in the next computer. As you already know, they're all free programs.

So I would have to write you and ask the name of a file I need. Why don't you just give them logical names? "Backups, Restore, Recoveries" is logical. You can have up to 255 characters for the path.

Geek pots is what I call directories containing installs, fix-its, tweakers, configurators, and much more. You made a PaulB&Snick geek pot, I made one for the W7F folks.

When you mention file names, are you meaning the one in Google/MyDrive's college cafe's collections? If yes, keep in mind almost all of these things were created during pre-DOS"7", pre-Windows 95-98SE days. I was limited to eightCharacters.threeCharacters filenames to be able to use within DOS 3.3 to DOS 6.22, and within Windows 3.1 to Windows For Workgroup 3.11. W95-98se reduced usage of the batch-files, config.sys, and related text-based material.

Yes, I meant Google/MyDrive's college cafe's collections. I didn't know they were DOS-era programs. What do you have in your collection that might be useful?

Very likely the most useful will be racing through batch-files and borrowing bits and pieces which can be altered to fit current batch-file needs and wants. Bits and pieces include: Choice, If exist, If not exist, echo Y or N for auto-answers, GoTo, and other things. PaulB or Snick, two of many batch-file gurus, might post examples of what if anything they found interesting and useful.

I don't know DOS well enough to write it, only Windows. I need someone to write the precise text and instructions. But thanks for the offer. I'll rely on the 3 of you if I need something.

Anyone giving a clear description of what, where, why, of something wanted, we three and others can give what we got.

Some time back, I mentioned DOS to one of my customers, and he said, "I don't have DOS, I have Windows."
It was all I could do, to hold back an out and out Belly Laugh! (what an idiot!)

Pull back the covers on Windows, and what have you got? DOS! Underneath Windows, DOS is busy running the computer.

In the early days of Windows, a user could shell out to a DOS prompt and use DOS like he/she did in the days prior to Windows.

When I built my first PC-XT, about forty years ago, my first OS was DOS 2.0. In those days you learned at least some basic DOS commands, or you didn't run a PC. With a little help from some friends, I became pretty proficient at writing Batch Files, and creating DOS Menu's, even in Ansi Color.
A bank president showed me how to do that.

Those were what I like to call, "The Good Ol' Days".

Season's Greetings Mates!

He wasn't an idiot. Not everyone started computing in days of DOS. Some of us who started computing with Windows 95 or 98 can't write in DOS, and many people are ignorant that they have it. I didn't grow up with computers, never touched one till I was 50. I'm a little familiar with DOS because we learned to use it for troubleshooting at my computer club. But I couldn't compose in it myself; I need to copy the command from someone.

Other people I know do just point-and-click. They're not idiots, just have no need for more than a few functions. The most brilliant person I know does just email, and asks for help with any anomalies.

I hope you're not treating your customers like idiots because they don't know DOS...

No, not at all. I just gently inform them that Windows is just a User Interface, that sits on top of a Disk Operating System (DOS).

I'm not a DOS expert, but just a happy DOS user. When I need to do something really complicated, I defer to someone with more expertise than I. And I'm never too proud to do that.

There are several 'Dos Experts' on this very forum that have helped me immensely.

Thanks guys, have a Great 2020!
