Windows Easy Transfer reports it will take DAYS to complete

I'm trying to migrate to Win 7 32-bit from one of my old XP computers. I only use this particular PC in my entertainment system, more or less as a jukebox. I downloaded Easy Transfer for 32-bit and started the process. I have less than 200GB to transfer, but the system is now telling me it will take more than 5 days to complete. I thought for sure that there had to be a problem with my installed WET, so I stopped the process, deleted, and re-downloaded it and installed. Same results. Does not seem to progress..... only extends the time needed to complete. I thought that maybe the program was "not responding", so I started Task Manager to check. It says that it is RUNNING. Is this normal? Will it take several days to transfer back after I install Win 7? Anyone have any advice? I will certainly appreciate any comments. Thanks.

I experimented with WET a few years back and had some ridiculous experience which I fortunately cannot completely recall.

That told me that it is not very reliable, sane, and well thought out.

So, I gave up on it entirely. I'll stop short of telling you to do the same, but you might want to lower your expectations and consider your Plan B----whatever that might be.

This WET is about the worst option you can choose to transfer data. And chances are very high that you will lose your files.

I suggest you copy the 200GB to an external disk and then restore them in your new system. Use Copy/Paste, it is the easiest and most reliable. Check on your external disk that everything is there before you erase the XP system.

You should look into Laplink's PC Mover app. It allows you to "migrate" from one PC to another. It's not free, but it saves you the effort of reinstalling all your apps on the second machine.

Also, WET does not transfer apps, it only transfers data and settings.

Thanks for the comments....... I ended up making a physical copy of my data to a USB drive and copied them back. This was the first of three computers I needed to upgrade to 7, and was my trial run since this was the machine with the least on it. Still need to do the other two, and will have to plan ahead if I am going to do the same thing. Thanks again.

Your data, music etc, should be on a separate drive, you`d never have to worry about this again
