Hi there,

a few days ago i bought a new Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 (i5, HD4000, 6GB, 500GB). Anyway, last night i ran the windows experience index thingy and got a lowest sub-score of 4.4 for aero performace and 6.7 for 3D business and gaming. my question is, why doesnt the experience index detect my 2GB dedicated nVidia GT 630M and scored the laptop for the intel HD graphics unit???? and isnt 4.4 a very low score for HD4000??

just curious....

Thnx...

Laptops with two video cards where one of them is a NVIDIA, it uses Optimus which only switches on the NVIDIA card when needed.
On my laptop I have the Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M, I am kind of surprised that your score is only 4.4 you may want to try to rerun it again I have 7.4 for that score.

I have the 3570K with HD4000 graphics on my desktop and both my graphics scores are 6.7(it is overclocked) The lower Aero score is normal for a laptop, but you may have to refresh the WEI to get it to pick up the Nvidia graphics card.

I just re-ran the test and the score took a leap from 4.4 to 5.5 still for the HD4000,

How do i get the experience index to rate the GT630M??

Can this score improve with OCing and if so, how to OC it

I don't think there's a way to do that with a laptop. If you do some googling you'll find some articles about overclocking the HD 4000. Do it at your own risk.

Optimus

Your score for gaming is based on your graphics card, the HD 4000 is being used for aero because optimus isn't detecting a need for high performance on that test. If you want to get a higher score (which doesn't affect real life at all) you simply need to tell the NVIDIA system software to always use the NVIDIA card for everything.

You may be able to apply gpu boost software to your hd4000. I have the hd4000 on a itx mini mobo (i5-3570k) and the wie is 6.9.

Overclocking a laptop is a thoroughly bad idea. Overclocking means higher power consumption and that means more heat which laptops have little tolerance for. Many run hot at stock speeds. Manufacturers are well aware of this and thus omit from the BIOS the settings necessary for overclocking. This protects you from failures and them from the resulting warranty claims. The same goes for any OEM computer.
