I've found various people with similar problems but haven't yet found a solution that will fix my problem.

Everytime i open my personal folder for the account on my computer windows explorer crashes and has to restart
I can access documents straight from my documentsand everything fine it is just when i go through that particular section which i need to to access certain files.

Anyone got any ideas why it is crashing and how to fix it?
Thanks
Tom

I've done a virus check and gave the windows vista update thing a try but as im on windows 7 i didn't hold much hope for that

You should look in event viewer for the probable cause. To do so type eventvwr in search and go to the windows log applications tab.

You need to look for critical errors (they have red in the left hand column) that mention app hang, app crash, etc.

When you find them note the event ID and source code and tell us what they are.

Let us know if you need help with this

Here is something I would try.

Create a new user account with same permissions as yours. Login to windows with that user account and see if the same thing happens when you access that same folder.

If not, then it's your windows profile. If it does do the same thing, then you will need to throw in the Win7 disc and do a repair install.

not sure what u mean by the source code but this is what the eventvwr says:
event 1000 for explorer.exe as an error - i assume thats the 1 that is important

there is a ridiculously long list of events so if thats not the problem i can go through them but that one happens quite a lot of times

There you go then! You found the problem. corrupt user profile.

now this is what I would do.

  • While logged into the new user, browse out to your old profile name and copy your data to the new profile.
  • Do not copy hidden files and folders if you have them showing.
  • To disable viewing hidden files and folders, goto Computer/Organize/Folder and Search options. Goto View tab and check "Don't show hidden files and folders."
  • Once you have done this, then copy your info to the new profile.
  • Shutdown and restart, login with the new user account that you have is now working, and see if you can do what you are wanting to do, if you can, then awesome! You are done.
Please don't forget the rep. :)
