Hi all,

I constantly get a loop of "Windows Explorer has stopped working" errors.

I've been trying to resolve this for hours now, I've looked at other threads similar to my problem but nothing seems to work. I'm currently on Safe Mode as this is the only way I can do anything without getting the error.

Here is AppCrash report:

Hope this helps, I don't understand it to be honest. Someone told me to use ShellExView but I'm not sure what to disable and it's going to be so time consuming to do it one by one. Has anyone got any ideas?

FYI, I've had this problem for some time, basically I've just ignored it and left the laptop alone, but now I need it... so if this problem is a result of a 'recently install program' or something, I couldn't tell you which one it would be. And I have no restore points in system restore, already tried.

Thanks.

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Does it only crash when you open certain folders? Like folders containing video files or image files?

You may have installed a codec whtat is not compatible with windows. Explorer will use any codecs if finds for any file types in each folder you open to gain information about the file and a thumbnail for it.

If that is the case you can ununstall the codecs and install something else more compatible (Sharkey's for example). You can also try turning on the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" in your Explorer preferences as a temp solution. (Explorer->Organize->Folder and Search Options->View->(top check box)

ZigZag,

I've looked at the Event Viewer and all the errors say the same thing; Event ID: 1000, Application Error, Task Catagory: (100).

Hope this info sheds some light on the problem...?

Well, I'm pleased to say... ISSUE RESOLVED! :D

I have just gone through everything on my laptop and have uninstalled and deleted about 30GB of junk! It must have been something I installed or downloaded quite some time ago. I don't know why I didn't do that sooner.

To anyone experiencing this problem and cannot find a cause, delete all unnecessary files and programs, it might just fix the problem.

Thanks to those who replied anyway.

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem. The problem only started when I downloaded some Youtube files. I downloaded a lot of them of the past years, but never came across this problem. After deleting those files, my problem got solved.

Another thing noteworthy to mention is that when I would log on with a different log-in, then I wouldn't have any problem. However, when going to that directory containing those corrupted files, windows explorer would crash again. It would only crash once and it wouldn't loop the crashing procedure. Those corrupted files were downloaded on the desktop, that is why when login into my user account, it would crash constantly. When deleting them, the problem got resolved.

When scanning for viruses and spyware, nothing would come up. Likewise, registery check ups and repairs with CCleaner would not help either.
