From your post it is clear that your ati drivers are causing explorer to crash frequently..

Try updating to the latest version of your drivers.

Use the manufacturers drivers or else update from ati site

oh good call. i somehow overlooked that ati part. actually i just updated them a week or 2 ago and never even made the connection that that may be it, i'll reinstall them and see if that helps, thanks!
