One of my notebook computer's hard drive is full of bad sectors .. so I'm just waiting for that day when I start it, it will be dead.
So if the test detects bad sectors. do not save any valuable data on it and replace it when you have the opportunity

Use the Seagate diagnostic tool to test your disk. https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

If you find your drive has bad clusters or bad blocks, replace it ASAP.
Bad sectors and / or bad clusters means your drive is dying.

Buy a small SSD (128G) for Windows and programs, a HDD for data and a HDD to make backups.
During Win 7 installation move the C:\Users to D:\Users (Use Kari tutorial, very easy). I can guide you as I did on my desktop.

On the backup drive also install win 7 and install the backup and disk image software. Once a week, attach the power cable and do your data backup from Main data drive.

Megahertz07 suggestions are very good. If the C disk would crash then your user data is easy to find.
I have done so on my mother's computer.
I myself never saves files in my documents folders, so I haven't moved them on my computers.

And the magic words all over the forum.. always backup, backup and backup.

As you can't trust your HDD better use the Seatools for DOS. Download the ISO file, burn a cd, boot the computer from it and run the tool. https://www.seagate.com/files/www-content/support-content/downloads/seatools/_shared/downloads/SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO

Hi! I reinstalled windows 7 and everything seems to work like a charm now!! Should I still run the test on the HDD or the fact that everything is smooth demonstrates that the issue came from the operating system and not from the hardware?

Do a diagnostic with Seagate tools.

Ok. I had to format again. I have the impression that windows update messes up everything completely. I deactivate windows update. Now I am using the seagate tools. Which test should I choose from the list? I did the smart test and it passes. The short drive self test failed quickly. The short generic test failed at 3%. Is there a test that says for sure if the drive is good or not? Should I try a fix all?

Then I did another long test through dos. It found 72 error but it repaired them all. Then, I ran another test but again it found errors. I am not sure how reliable this tool is. The computer seems to work perfectly fine like a new computer. I really don't know what to do. I deactivated all windows update for now. Don't need them anyway for what I am doing with this computer (office work)...Let me know what you think.
