There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Let us know if you need help with any of this.

Ken

Thanks zizgag3143,

I resorted to restoring the system to 4 days ago before I had read your post. All now seems ok for the time being but will get back if it starts to reoccur.

The only major things I have done to my computer in the last couple of weeks is replace both SATA hard drives as the existing were rather old. Restored the OS using a system image. Also installed one of the old hard drives as a 3rd spare drive in the slot previously occupied by the floppy drive. Could I maybe be putting too much strain on the 375w PSU?

Hi Ken,

Just had a look at eventvwr and it still seems to have retained the current log despite having done a restore.

The main error which occurs multiple times is.

Source - Search
Event IDs - 7042, 7040, 7010, 3058, 3028, 3029
Task Category - Gatherer

Also

Source Search
Event ID 9002
Task Category - Search Service

Does any of this give a clue to the problem that occured.

Your help is much appreciated.

While investigating the rest of the event id's I thought I would relay one 9002 indicates the log is full. It may be preventing you from further logging.

Ken

edit: the rest of the event id's refer to problems initializing applications and reporting them. If you haven't run a system file check yet you should

Thank you

Have run SFC which reported no problems.

Have also cleared the logs.

No more problems as yet but of course I did restore the system from 4 days ago. I think the problem may have started after an Adobe Reader update. Would this be a possibility?

Cheers

Yes it is possible. In fact my upgrade failed on that same app.
