Windows Explorer not responding

Everything was fine until two days ago. It started when I was trying to make a video in windows movie maker. It kept becoming unresponsive, and started to crash every time I tried to use it. The computer shut down and started itself up again. Since then, sometimes when I try to do certain things, such as personalize, going into certain folders, such as photos, it says Windows Explorer is unresponsive. This computer is 2 years old, and has never given my problems before. I did use cmd SFC /SCANNOW. It was clean. I have run virus and spyware scans, they were clean. I did recently install a new anti-virus as well as updating several programs. I used update checker, and it had a list of programs that needed updating. I noticed the problems starting after that. I don't know if it's somehow related. Any ideas?

You state "I used update checker", is that a generic term or did you actually use "FilesFrog Update Checker
from Somoto Ltd"? If the latter, see the following link and if not disregard;

I uninstalled AVG and installed avast.

Did the update checker provide you with a list of the programs updated?

They were browser and java updates

You could try a Clean Startup for troubleshooting.

I would run AVG's uninstall utility if you haven't already. Lot's of times standard uninstalls do not get rid of all AV hooks, and I've found AVG to implant itself quite extravagantly. Afterward you could use AutoRuns to check for anything left over, or for other unwanted startups. I definitely would create a system restore point before I used AutoRuns, as it's pretty easy to break the boot.
