Windows Explorer search issues

Hi,

I tried win 7 x64 ultimate and found compatibility issues with two legacy programs that I need to continue using so I moved to the 32 bit ultimate and they indeed worked in the compatibility mode.

I have found an issue migrating my email program (Pegasus) from my XP desktop to the laptop which has win 7. If I install a virgin Pegasus in win 7 I have no issues and it works fine. When I migrate my old folders and data to the same location in win 7 I have issues. It seems as if perhaps some data is being stored in a different folder than it used to be.

I have unhid operating files & folders to give me the maximum visibility of files and folders as possible and I looked in the roaming folder but see nothing relating to Pegasus. In Pegasus a folder has a suffix of .PMM and I thought if I searched for that suffix I would find where they are being kept but when I go to start and enter .PMM in "search programs and files" it searches the computer and finds none. I know there are at least 50 .PMM files on drive C which I brought over from the old Pegasus folder, I can see them in the folder but search does not find them. I did add the index search to see if that would help but it did not.

Ie: I searched for FOL065A6.PMM and it does not show in the search but the file exists in two folders on the C drive.

In the short time I used the 64 bit Ultimate I found the search was just like Vista which was crippled compaired to the ease in XP but it still worked.

So my question has two parts;

How does one search so that all files are scanned and reported?

Where else other than in the roaming folder might I look to find where these files are being relocated to in win 7 installations?

Thanks,

Gary

If you click on my computer in win7, the top right hand corner is a search bar for the whole c:\

If you click on any directory on the left pane, it will only search that directory using the same search bar.

Hi JV,

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried doing that and while it searches, there's a whole lot of files it doesn't uncover. Must be the settings

Is there any way to have a search like XP used? I'm a musician and have many thousands of MP3s & many of which are the same tunes/songs done by multiple bands. With XP I could search for a specific file and a search through 130 gigs of MP3s took maybe 20 seconds.

Anything like that available in 7?

Thanks again!

Gary

Sounds like you are looking for a third party search program. I don't have any experience with any, the windows search features have always sufficed for myself. I have 1TB of mixed movies/music/programs that it searches through with no problem.

Sorry bud, report the search problem with microsoft so they are aware that the search functionality isn't working correctly.

I've since migrated back to Win 7 x64 from the 32 bit version and the search in this iteration works as it appears to be designed to do.

Any time a new version of a product is rolled out, design changes have to be apparent for it to be considered a new version & not a glossed over upgrade. Win 7 changed the search interface greatly compared to XP's structure. After trying them both I find XP's search engine is easier and more ergonomic in design, in that all the searching was done with mouse movements on the left side of the screen and selecting the display for the results was localized with a minimum of keystrokes.

I'll get used to the new approach soon enough.

Thanks for your reply!

In Pegasus a folder has a suffix of .PMM and I thought if I searched for that suffix I would find where they are being kept but when I go to start and enter .PMM in "search programs and files" it searches the computer and finds none.

Try to search for *.pmm from the top root and so the C.

Very happy with this buid.
I struggled a lot to find all compatible parts since I wanted an Intel 1151 based motherboard so to be able to install Windows 7.
I chose this case because it has amazing air flow, it's sturdy and looks good.
The case included 1x 200mm front and 1x 120mm back fans, I added 1x 200mm on the top and 1x120 bottom fans and modded the panels with black stockings for women s

It's always useful to anyone who could have a similar issue also it's always available in a browser search engine and always available on Sevenforums unless it'll be deleted.
We are not talking about reviewing a 10 year old mummy device but a vital function of an operative system.
