Windows Explorer stalling

We have noticed Windows Explorer stalling from time to time (which the system reports in a popup), followed by restarting itself a few moments later (again announced in a popup). This behavior does not seem to coincide with any other activity by the user or the computer. This behavior began after installing Fences software, which has otherwise been very well behaved and useful. At the suggestion of Fences tech support, we have listed the program and associated files in the exclusion list for Norton Internet Security, but the erratic behavior continues.

Is there something we can do to stabilize Windows Explorer?

Hello Peter and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry you're having these issues.

Couple of things you could try. If you won't be inconvenienced by losing any recently installed programs, you could try restoring your computer to an earlier date using a restore point.

If that doesn't help you could try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial):

If any problems are found run the scan three times rebooting in between each scan. You should also make sure you've run scans with your antimalware program of choice. The free version of Malwarebytes is highly recommended as an alternative scan. It seems to catch things other programs miss. Let us know if anything helps.

If it was my computer I would just remove the new added program for ever. Any program that screws up the proper operation of Windows 7 is a program I don't need or want. As suggested by marsmimar run sfc /scannow. You will find that their are many 3rd party little do-dad programs that Windows 7 just doesn't like.
