What did you do just before this started? You could be looking at a reinstall if you can't/won't try a restore point. Unless the only restore point you have is from your initail install, it won't uninstall all of your programs, just one to that point.

I think you should full scan for registry errors and malwares. Make sure that computer is virus free.

I am not going to be any help but just so everyone knows I have had this same issue before. For weeks I looked for a solution and never found one. Luckily Windows Explorer would start working again for me after a minute or so.

I did a new install about a month ago where I did a format of my C drive before the new install. I have not had the problem since then (keeping my fingers crossed).

When I was having the issue I ran the Error Log (it gave me no clue as to the problem), I ran full scans with Malwarebytes and MSE and both showed that I was clean of malware and viruses.

Now you see why I can't help you. I can only tell you that you are not alone with this issue.

Good Luck

Hey demetroman,
You can solve your problem by installing a theme, it will change your Windows Explorer to a new one, this may help!
My friends told me it is not illegal because it is a custom Windows Explorer! If you want it post that you want it and I will show you the steps!

Seavixens steps are the only steps that should be taken to fix a broken Windows Explorer.

Do not make the mistake of installing so-called custom Windows Explorer, or taking up an offer to receive files relating to such customisation - you have no idea what could be buried in the code.

Golden

Yes Golden is right, It may contain viruses, if you don't trust the owner. If you feel unsafe you can ask Microsoft to give you a Windows Explorer (explorer.exe).

Not a good idea. Windows explorer needs to work properly before trying a custom theme. As Golden says there are many poisoned themes which contains trojans, worm, or even a bad rootkit.

Yes Britton30 I agree that it may contain viruses, worms, trojans, etc. , but he can get the theme from a trusted publisher and/or certified by Microsoft, Anyway if he feels unsafe he can ask Microsoft to get a Windows Explorer as I mentioned above (Microsoft will give you a safe Windows Explorer that contain no viruses, etc.).

Secondly, there is a registry trick to change the default Windows Explorer and/or theme.

Addas, we should get the system working properly before any trick and hacks are attempted.
Do you have a link for Microsoft Explorer?

Personally, I wouldn't recommend registry hacks to anyone - it's just asking for trouble.

A repair install should solve most problems including putting the registry back on an even keel

He can repair his system and run a Windows Explorer by buying Mini Windows XP bootable CD, so he can control the system and registry!

and as seavixen32 said to use Repair Install, it is a good idea too!
