Windows Explorer stops working after resolution change

I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution to this. I have 8 Win7 computers on a home network. On two of them, Windows Explorer will crash if I change the resolution or add a second monitor. It then restarts Explorer and everything is okay. It's really just an annoyance. The other 6 computers don't have the problem.

I would blame the video card driver except that one is nVidia and the other is ATI. Both drivers are up to date.

I also should note that I use LogMeIn to access other computers on the network and the crash happens then also (since LogMeIn changes the remote computer's graphics settings). I've uninstalled LogMeIn to rule that out as a problem.

Any ideas? TIA

Please provide this information on one of the systems even though you're not experiencing BSOD's: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html
Please let us know the time that this system last crashed explorer.exe (it'll make searching the reports easier).

If that doesn't work, then I'd suggest you create a memory dump of the crashing process according to these instructions: http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/34940-generating-memory-dump-crashing-process.html

Thank you for the pointers on this, while your solution did not work, it led me to one that did.

I am on Windows 8.1 x64 Pro, and I run my OS on a system drive. I had moved my desktop location to a separate HDD to save space. This appears to be what caused explorer to hang. I moved all my desktop contents into some other folder, and then told windows to set my desktop folder location back to the C:\Users\Username\Desktop default, and it worked! no more freezes!

It seems there's a very short timeout that if your desktop folder doesn't respond completely within, explorer gives up entirely and kills itself.

Even with no contents in my HDD desktop folder, the response time was too slow.
