Windows failed to load, problem may be AVG?

My computer fails to load windows and keeps restarting at the point of the windows load screen.

When I started my computer, I got a pop-up saying AVG needed to restart the computer for an update. After the restart, the Windows Repair screen came up saying windows failed to load. Startup Repair tried to automatically fix the problem, which was taking a while, so I turn on my laptop. I saw the same AVG update pop up, and I wasn't yet suspicious of it so I restart my laptop as well. Unfortunately the same thing appears on the laptop.

The auto repair worked on the laptop but it failed on the desktop. Now the desktop acts as I've described above: it restarts every time it gets to the Windows loading screen. Running in safe mode does nothing. Trying a system restore (to yesterday, when it was working fine) does nothing. When the laptop restarted to normal, I got the AVG update window again, which I'm ignoring for now.

Both computers run Win7 Home Premium x64.

If it's any help, here's the desktop's Startup Repair problem details:

My mother just called me with this same issue on Vista x64. After updating AVG it crashes and is stuck in a reboot cycle.

Good one AVG, now I have to go over there and fix her computer... This is not what I planned on doing this weekend :/

sure it's an avg problem

I'm pretty sure it's an AVG problem. Have two laptops running, one vista x32, the other windows 7 ultimate x64, both running AVG 2011 and both with same error. I have a ticket sent to AVG, but don't think will get a response for a few days....just have that gut feeling. If i get an answer soon, i'll post here. Temp solution: don't shut down or restart computer....

Hi and welcome to the forum. Uninstall AVG using this removal tool: Tool (64 bit). If you have Identity Protection installed, remove it using this tool: Tool. AVG is a known cause of crashes and problems on some Win 7 systems. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. Make sure Windows Firewall is turned on. See if your system runs better. Let us know.

My Lenovo X201T laptop just had a failure to start after AVG update, just like reported above. Restored, and it happened again, so I will have to restore and immediately turn off AVG update, until AVG gets back to me with an answer.

No, when restored to previous restore point (11/26/2010 in my case) windows starts normally, but AVG will re-update, and if I restart after that update, windows will not restart.

avg uninstall crashed windows 7

CarlTR6,
Ran the uninstall link you suggestged and the Windows 7 machine crashed. Trying to repair - restore. Ran the uninstall (for the 32bit vista machine), but AVG still here. Machine up and running but still has the AVG need to restart popup.

2 Windows 7 64 bit Computers crash after AVG Update

I am absolutely furious. It is DEFINITELY the last AVG.

First my desktop, then, immediately after, my Sony laptop. Crashed within 5 minutes of eachother, after restarting after the most recent update.

Right now I fear I may have lost my data on my laptop - several days worth since I last backed up. I am freaking out.

Who's up for a class action lawsuit?

The avgremoverx64.exe did not remove AVG. Oddly though, after the restart, it did not crash, meaning AVG did not update during that restart. Would it be safe to remove AVG via control panel -> uninstall a program?

dfx,
I'll let you know .... i'm trying uninstall from control panel on windows 7 machine now.

System Restore brought my Desktop back to life.

And, my laptop initially did NOT come back after attempting two System Restore points. Then, it mysteriously did come back. So my data is fine.

I've disabled all AVG updates on both computers. Will this be sufficient to stop the crashes? Or is it wise to uninstall AVG completely from both?

i shut down avg updates on the vista machine, but the stupid popup that avg needs to restart came back. I just keep hitting postpone for now (keep clicking 60 minutes but keeps popping up every 5). Windows 7 machine is now rebooting from control panel removal of avg (and avg identity protection). Will let you know how that works in just a couple minutes.

Over at AVG forums, they're trying to get a workaround/fix to this as well. Here's one promising one:
Free Antivirus | Forum - Found a Workaround (or Fix) for the Win 7 crashing issue

Basically to go into command prompt and rename all avg .exe and .bak files. Can someone explain how to do that using cmd? I don't know commands other than the very basic ones, like cd.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. And I misunderstood the fix, it actually meant to rename all .exe files to .bak files.

And it didn't work for my desktop, unfortunately.

OK, uninstalled avg from control panel - restarted - back up and running great...no AVG.....although avg identity protection will not remove from control panel...will try the other program to remove that if it becomes a problem....been using avg for years and first time i've ever had a problem....but don't need problems like crashing my comps...not sure what i'll use now...gots to find something....ok, time to try removing avg from this vista machine

dfvx990mq321pl - uninstall in safe mode (AVG should not be active). I had to remove it the same way.

Just in-case this helps anyone find an answer -

Had the same problems as reported , using last known good config did not help.
Re-installed windows and programs - installed AVG last (doh) - it updated and restarted.
Problem back.
Using last known good config got windows working again this time.
Now AVG was still giving me messages about needing to run first scan etc, however there were no active AVG modules.
Removed in safe mode as AVG uninstall was getting stuck on a log file that was apparently in use.

Same thing just happen to me and I just uninstall AVG through control panel. AVG updated, ask me to restart and I did. Start up did not start up and computer restarts. Windows 7 start up fix activated and I system restore. Did this twice with AVG and same thing happen. So I restore once more and uninstall AVG through control panel which solve my problem.

Yes, it is safe to do that. Usually the tool does a more thorough job. I recommend that you download Revo Uninstaller (free) and use it to remove AVG.
