Windows Fails to Boot after Norton Ghost recovery (autochk not found)

Hi guys,

I recently backed up my Hitachi drive which developed bad sectors and then restored it to a same size Seagate one. The operation was done through Norton Ghost. Both backup and restore operations completed successfully, however, when I tried to boot up with the new drive, Windows 7 failed to boot with the message

autochk not found - skipping AUTOCHECK

and rebooting afterwards.

Can't boot into Safe Mode either.

1. There are two partitions, one is marked as 07 and the other is 27 (VAIO recovery). No hidden partitions.

2. The recovery console says Bad Driver (A recent driver installation may have caused a problem), because I believe the driver for previous hard drive was different (this one is actually a Seagate Momentus XT, so it must have some different driver). Yes, I ran it three times. By the way, recovery runs from the same hard disk.

Guys, any idea how I can get this thing to boot. I really don't want to reinstall tons of programs, even though I can obviously recover all of my docs.

PLEASE HELP!!

Thanks,

Fartcatsat

Did you instruct Ghost to copy the MBR?

Yes I did - but MBR doesn't seem to be the problem here. The computer boots and THEN comes up with a message.

I actually ran bootsec /fixmbr etc, but same thing remains.

Just ran it with boot logging - it says

Did not load driver \SystemRoot\SysWow64\Drivers\VD_FileDisk.SYS

then, in a couple of lines...

Did not load driver \??\C:\System32\Drivers\cbfs64.sys

then, failed to load NDProxy.sys and finally BTHUSB.sys

then the log ends.

so, I believe the problem is in the hard disk driver. The question is, how do you change the driver 'on the fly', so that Windows 7 recognises it?

Can you run a system repair? You would need optical drive media to do this.

Wonder why it needs virtual disk (VD_FileDisk.SYS)? Can you check in command prompt if that file is there?

Yep, I can run system repair from CD or from Hard Drive, if it prompts me after Reboot to Launch Repair.

And yep, the file is there. I don't know why it needs it.

Would gladly do it, but Windows does not back up disks with bad sectors - they produce errors!!
