Windows Fax and Scan

Would like send multiple faxes, possibly 1000's without tying up phone line. Does anyone know how we can go about doing this with window fax and scan. Do we need a purchase a fax program or service? If so, any recommendations.

What you need

If you're planning to send and receive faxes at home, you first need to outfit your PC with a fax modem.

A fax modem is a relatively inexpensive piece of add-on hardware that allows your computer to communicate with a fax machine over a standard phone line. The devices are sold at major computer stores and come in two varieties: internal and external.

Internal fax modems plug directly into your computer motherboard, similar to the way a video or sound card is plugged in. External fax modems are small devices that connect to the serial or USB ports.

If you're at work, another option is to see if your employer has a fax server—a dedicated computer equipped with multiple fax modems. Sending a fax using a fax server doesn't require you to add any special hardware to your PC. You just set up a connection with the fax server and go.

The only way that I'm aware of to send faxes without using your own phone line, is to use a commercial fax service, like Kinkos for instance, but that could become quite expensive for that volume of faxes.

There are online fax services, we've used on for years now. Cheaper than maintaining a dedicated fax line. To use the web-based service we sign into our account, fill out the fax info ie recipient(s) names and numbers, cover page if any and so on. Then the docs are uploaded and click on "fax". Easy-Peasy.

It sometimes takes a couple minutes but we get a confirmation email when it's successfully been sent. We also got a "fax number" that others can return fax and we receive it as an email attachment in pdf. The service we use has a limit for normal-low fax use and it's cheap. I imagine there are commercial counterparts out there for the volume like you're talking about.

Follow up on Addram's suggestion. I live in Europe, he in the States. Most countries have the availablity of two numbers automatically, with two quite seperate lines. I would not doubt that Canada has the same availablity. The cost of activating and renting the second line is usually minimal.

Traderpats what program have you found successful? We are looking to run fax from CPU and are new to this. Paying out the nose for two home lines. We thank you or if anyone else may know of a way to go without using a phone line to fax from CPU that can do normal-low fax in and out service

Depending on your needs it will vary. For what we did MyFax worked just fine. Its all web-based so nothing to install. Just scan docs as say pdf and upload to the fax service. It ran $10/mo so it was much better than a phone line. In fact we've been phone line free for years now after we went all cellular. For serious, commercial volume faxing you'll want to shop around but for the usual home office / small business there are plenty of providers to choose from....

Fax and Scan can multi-fax but it would be dialling each one after the other tying up the phone line for some time. From the help file:

When you create or forward a fax, just type the fax number for each recipient, separated by semicolons, in the To box. You can also select one or more recipients from the Windows Contacts folder (if you use it to store fax numbers for your contacts)

You might want to use a commercial fax service for bulk faxing or one of the online ones previously suggested.

Don't forget the law states that you must include in the fax clear instructions on how to opt-out of future communications.
