Windows Firewall does work, why wouldn't it work?
It comes disabled by default, though, and like every firewall, corretly configuring it requires some networking knowledge.

I have not seen update related to WF its rules based system which will function even when Microsoft stop supporting Windows 7.

Windows Firewall will keep working but it will not be updated after Jan 2020. So it would be best to install an AV program that has it's own Firewall, which will be updated as needed.
