Hi Guys,

Having a weird problem with a LaCie 1TB Network space. It is plugged into my router and i can see it on my windows 7 computer, map its folder as a network drive and even create folders/new word documents on it.

However whenever i try and copy a file larger than a few kB my entire computer freezes (completely unresponsive). The computer recovers fine on a hard reboot.

Any Ideas?

Also my computer freezes after being left on for a while (this may be due to utorrent, saw some mention of it causing windows to crash after an hour).

Thanks

After a windows reinstall the problem has persisted. Also it seems to be if i copy files to any network location. utorrent is not installed so it is not the problem.

Random freezes such as you are experiencing are usually related to Ram settings or bad Ram. You might try to bump up the Ram voltage and the north and south bridge voltages in your bios.

I have had a similar problem with the same disk. It arrived yesterday to replace my Netgear SC101 SAN which does not have 64-bit drivers and therefore can't be used with Windows 7 x64.

When I plugged in the Lacie disk under Windows XP, everything worked normally. I only noticed the drive is rather slow. I had expected much more speed since it has a gigabit connection and so do my pc and router.

Then I rebooted my pc to Windows 7 x64. At first everything seemed to work well. As W7 can display the flie transfer speed during copy actions, I was curious to see what it would be. The speed unfortunately did not go over 6MB/s which disappointed me very much for a gigabit system.

After copying a few files I suddenly had a blue screen. The first time ever with W7. The file that was being copied could not be removed through a pc with XP. After rebboting the W7 pc, it could be removed. But the problem with the blue screens persisted. All together it occured 5 times. It even happened when the drive was connected but not in use at all.

Having shut the drive off, the problem seems to have gone. W7 works normally again without a problem. If this problem keeps occurring the drive is useless and I will send it back for a refund.

The very slow speed also disappoints me. My SC-101 with 100Mb/s was much faster.

Hey, well my lacie drive is plugged into the router by just normal ethernet. I found that my problem with freezes was due to an overtaxed power supply. By unplugging an old dvd and hard drive i solved it.

I have this problem as well, although for now I'm only experiencing this with a network drive attached to my usb network hub. This is more random of a thing for me. My recommendations would be to run a disk check on all disks. If explorer crashes and restarts, this causes a problem on the network, as the router i have on the network the usb network hub is connected to, it goes NUTS... I know this since the only other thing on THAT particular router is a ps2 which is not active.

I would think that in my situation its not the routers atleast, since same setup is being used under XP boot and having no issues, maybe one in a blue moon.

Daj, do you have software for your hub? Did you have to install in comp mode? I did not for mine, and had no install errors or problems, so i think.

Secondly, what speeds are you seeing via the transfer? via recognition of the drive (initial read and discover)? and read speeds over lan?

Daj, not sure if the power would be THE issue.... if so, pls come back and report your findings here, over the next week or so. Sounds like we have a similar setup. Whats your PSU?

The problem keeps appearing. Searching the internet I have found some references that it might have something to do with a virus scanner trying to scan the files on the network drive. But even if I disable the virus scanner, the problem keeps appearing. So I have decided to return the network drive for a refund.

Now the question is just what other network drive solution will work on W7. I don't want to buy any other equipment only to find out it causes blue screens.

After uninstalling AVG Free 8.0 and installing Antivir the problem seems to have disappeared. I can now write/read files to/from the LaCie disk without any problems.

Still I am returning the drive this aftrenoon because it is very slow. Write speeds are roughly 6,5MB/s and read speeds are roughly 8.5MB/s which is too slow for a gigabit network drive.

You also have to have a gigabit network. Gigabit router/switch/hub, gigabit nic card, and would suggest running cat-5e cables ATLEAST for a gigabit network.... but the initial discovery/read speeds are only going to be around 5-6mbit... my upload is around 22mbit.... read is around 12.... but then again, my network isnt gigabit optomized either.

If you still want to go the way of network drives. I would recommend the Belkin network usb hub. I have this, and works brilliantly (under comp vista mode). This device is 4port, but will accept up to 16 devices connected thru or to it. I have 8 devices connected to it now. Of course if you decide to hook up a usb hub TO the network usb hub, make sure the usb hub is 2.0 compliant or you will see slow speeds that way as well.

As I wrote, my entire network and all appliances are gigabit.

The LaCie disk is returned and I have ordered a Netgear SAN with a 1TB disk. This SAN reaches speeds between 30MB/s and 40MB/s according to several tests. Hope to have it delivered next week.

you should get faster speeds than that... you should see those speeds on a good wireless N setup. What type of router are you using? What firmware? I would lean towards the router you are using. With those speeds you are only be utilizing 4% of the total gigabit network speed.

what speeds were you seeing under XP with the other network drive?

30MB/s - 40MB/s is much faster. :D Remind the capital B for bytes, not bits.
Getting a transfer speed of 30-40MB/s on a network drive seems pretty good. In the tests I have seen, no NAS came over that kind of performance.
