Windows frozen on update installation screen

Hi, after downloading the latest updates for Windows 7 home premium edition i have attempted to shut down my computer (when the updates would normally be installed). For several hours now it has been frozen on the blue update installation screen "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 2 of 10...". Pressing any of the keys or buttons achieves nothing, pleae help!

It does sound as if it's stalled.
Hold down the power button for about 6 seconds - this should force a power-off.
then reboot the machine - what happens?
