Windows Home Server Code Name "Vail" public preview

Geez, I can't even add it in VB, it needs a 160GB HDD to install. What a PITA!
Can't you just create a 160GB drive in VB, but have it start out small and dynamically adjust in size? So, the OS thinks you have 160GB...while the actual install only uses a fraction of it?

I downloaded this yesterday, but haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

Ted if you want to join a PC to the server then open a browser on the PC you want to connect and go to http://YOURSERVERNAME/connect

How is the servers holding up people....especially ones that have dedicated machines

I haven't done much more than set it up yet, but it's built on server 2008 r2 so I have no doubt it will be rock solid.

That sounds great John....I may just have to make a dedicated Desktop for it (have one lying around not completed....)

It is really nice they built it on R2

Ah, this is great news!

I love WHS, though as a "1.0" product it was a little rough on the friendly UI side, missing features which slowly got added. And then there is Microsoft's penchant for giving up on things if the marked doesn't immediately snap at it and in astronomical numbers. I was a little afraid WHS was going to get dropped soon, so seeing that there is a new version coming out is really great news!

I think I'll personally just keep an eye on this thread and wait for release though :D

I notice that the screen says "Windows Home Server PREMIUM". So I wonder if they REALLY ARE planning two different versions as was postulated some time ago with the announcement of a newer version in the pipeline. I think I am going to have to come down on the 2 version side. This leads me to wonder what will be REMOVED that we have come to expect from version I. I personally was annoyed when RDP was required to utilize the Remote Admin function (requiring the PRO versions of windows to work) even though it was one of the selling points when advertised to the general user base w/o mind you any statement that higher end windows versions would NEED to be installed to use this function. Only time will tell. Sincerely hope Microsoft doesn't pull another pita with this product and ignore the installed base of the product that supported it in the first place.

I believe you have misunderstood. Windows Home Premium comes with the RDP client to connect to the server.....it just doesn't allow you to RDP into the Home Premium product. So, you don't need an advanced version of Windows to take advantage of this functionality.

Windows Home Server Winter Park doesn't have the same jingle.

I am pretty excited about WHS ability to be a fax gateway so I can leave my i7 rigs turned off unless im using them. I have no idea how to use WHS though.
