Yes it was built on server 2003, it's more like XP than vista.

yeah it is kind of like a scaled down 2003 server. I love it, i used to use it as a main repository for all my movies. it comes with a plugin that allows it to communicate with mce very easily. With the addittion of the power pack, there are even more possibilities.

It has no Client ability...just a control console to do what you need with it

Windows Home Server is based on Windows Server 2003. Definitely not Vista basic. You have to run a server version of anti-virus which would up your cost as I am not aware of any free av for servers but I guess you could use it as a client. I wouldn't myself as I like to keep my servers more protected/secured than web surfing allows.

All you have to do is sign up to Connect and apply to be a Beta Tester....it doesn't cost anything.
WHS PP1 is on Technet and it then updates to PP2 via Windows update...or if you don't have Technet you can apply for an Evaluation (120 days) via Connect.
The whole thing is brilliant.....I use it to stream music, videos etc via my WiFi to my PS3 and then through my Home stereo system, both our PC's are backed up nightly and the various shares are mirrored across all the drives so if there is a drive failure I don't lose everything. I do have a hard copy of Photos and important software stored away....just in case though....lol.
