windows "hour glass" seems to be in a loop & can't click on any icons

Hi guys. I have a 1 year old i7 core dell :

1. the windows "hour glass" seems to be in a loop & I can't click on any icons to start a program.
2. at start-up I receive a msg that a "windows file" could not be located because it was moved to memory ......
3, Can't open file folder "system call fail".
4. system is awfully slow in spite of high specs.
5. wifi does not work. I think maybe drive is missing.

I started having problems with windows taking around 5 minutes to start. Anti-Virus "Avast" program would stop working on its own. and when i was able to scan the system would crash then i received a "system dump" or something like that and then a "chckdsk" was performed and several "67xxx unreadable files". So I deleted Avast installed Kaspersky and it removed several threats. startup still took very long time so i uninstalled some programs and that's when the "hour glass" problem started.

Appreciate help you can offer me.

Thanks, Ali

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

When you say you deleted Avast, did you actually go to their website & download their uninstall program & run that. Just uninstalling anti virus programs in the usual way does not usually remove av programs properly.

Having 2 av programs can cause a lot of problems, so make sure you have completely removed Avast.

Hardware?

It could be a HDD problem.

According to a report I read a couple of years ago, HDD failures mostly happen:

  • Within the first few months
  • After about the third year
Still it seems a bit unpredictable if you look at this chart:

Thanks guys for your prompt reply.

I didn't uninstall Avast from the site. I uninstalled it from the Control panel. In fact, that's what I always do when I uninstall any program. I hope that's the source of my problems but how do i go about cleaning up this mess. Any suggestions please?

I installed the RegistryReviver program and it found over 950 errors so far. It continues to find errors every time i run it after I reboot or try to work on my laptop. The only improvement is that it takes 15 minutes to get windows working whereas it could take up to 25 minutes or not work at all and i have to restart several times.

I had a "winlogon.exe - bad image| error message but it seems to have gone away after RegistryReviver. :)windows went into safe mode, internet and audio stopped working. I restarted, and now I have to trouble shoot the network connection to get internet to work again.

And i just had a "crash dump" error message (?).

I will try SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker in a minute and see how it goes (fingers crossed).

I really appreciate the help and replies i have so far received and hope "SFC" will solve my problems.

I will have a go at it and see what happens. See you later and thanks :o

Registry programs are very hit and miss and generally best avoided, although it sounds like it has had a positive effect for you in this instance I wouldn't recommend it.
Going on what you are saying it sounds like you have serious and deep rooted problems that are not going to be easily solved, if that were my machine I think I would consider a clean install or at very least a repair install if you want to try and retain your setup
If you are reluctant to do this (and I understand most people would be including myself) you could try creating a new user account and check the functionality on that, would give you an idea of how widespread the problem is

hi again. I ran SCF/ Scannow 3 times but this is what i got:

Then i tried to down load "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014]" but got an error msg and download/installation failed. I thought i'd try to get to windows modular installer but couldn't find where it is located.

I tried to restore to a backup point before i started having all these problems but that failed also. I don't have a reboot system cd, just in case you consider this as an option ......so no backup no reboot,.....reckless and basically dumb compared to the average user.

Help!!!!!

Yes you are right, clean install will wipe the computer and start from fresh
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

A repair install will install over the top of your existing info and retain all user data, profiles and installed programs but is not guaranteed to be successful
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Creating a new user account may be worth a try but looking at your post above im not sure how successful it will be as there seems to be corruption within the windows structure that it cannot repair itself
Before you proceed with any kind of repairs or alterations I strongly suggest you backup all your data and files in case you problem deteriorates or turns out to be a failing hard drive etc
If you want to persevere with your existing install and try to repair it post up the sfc log and I will ask one of our other members that specialises in that sort of thing to have a look at your results but at this stage repair install may be the easiest way to go

cbs logs are really not my thing I have asked some other members to have a look
FWIW your log looks very short and does not show any errors, while we are waiting may be worth running another one and posting the results

Hmm - thinking about it, it occurs to me that this may be a problem that CHKDSK could fix (at least partially) - please follow these instructions...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your reply
