Windows Live Mail remove and reinstall

I upgraded to Windows 10 and didn't like it and came back to Windows 7. Not sure what happened, but my Windows Live Mail loaded up hundreds of messages I had deleted previously. In trying to delete them I encountered "an unexpected error has occurred". Anyway that is the background.

I removed Windows Live Mail then reinstalled. Same story when I started up the new version. So I'm guessing there are some other files that are holding all this information I also need to remove so that Windows Live Mail starts out completely clean. Anyone know what they are? I did delete the folder Window Live Mail under AppData, but that wasn't enough.

Hello Jim mate how did you get back to 7? as there seems to be a plethora of folks who have done what you did and now have issues.

Personally I like to wipe the drive first then reinstall 7 - a pain I know but I have this theory maybe wrongly that 10 leaves remnants which muck up any return to 7 but that is just my own view.

Any time I have tried 10 and gone back to 7 after I encountered the same sort of stuff the first time I tried 10 I have done what I have advised above and now no problems.

I meant to add above that I like to clone the original drive to try stuff out like 10 on the clone that way you can still revert back to the original drive if you are not happy with the trial of whatever say even a dual boot system.

I just found I didn't know my way around in 10 as well as 7. Plus I never upgraded to Windows 8 so the "tile" world was new to me. Then my wife and I each had an account on the desktop and in switching between them it suddenly gave a completely black screen requiring a reboot.

I used Windows 10 recovery option to put things back the way they were originally in 7. All went well except Windows Live Mail. In the folder that holds all the message information (WLM) there were some new folders I never had all starting with "Recovery". When I started up WLM I got 500 messages 95% of which were deleted a long time ago. And eventually bumped into the dreaded "an unknown error has occurred" which prevented me from deleting many of those messages.

Ultimately I did find a way to reinstall WLM and create a new folder. Then starting it up I added the accounts and all is well again. Of course, I did lose all of my previous messages and started with a blank sheet, but I didn't lose much of anything.

Your suggestion of clones and full backup is the best idea.

Jim I am not sure of why the WLM is not downloading those previous emails as I have done re installs many times and the mails have always come back on my accounts and I can only think that the 10 upgrade is till playing with the system somehow.

I think a drive wipe either with DISKPART or the Partition Wizard on that drive before re installing 7 is the way to go as I mentioned is what I always do - not that I have messed in 10 that much but I am pedantic about getting rid of remnants of any other system even Linux when I have been using it.

To wipe the drive you will need a machine to do that from unless you buy a completely new drive and a SSD would be the way to go but that depends on the budget of course.

I am as a matter of fact I am trying Linux Mint out now on my secondary laptop and in case I do not keep it although it is looking better the more I try it - I do have the original drive with 7 that I can just flip back into the machine.

Regarding your problem with the reloaded emails, I think that your email service provider does not delete the mail that you download to Live Mail. There is a setting that can be changed to delete the messages.

I have seen in the past where I would get that error when trying to delete a message. I found I could just drag it to the Deleted Items folder and then hit the x and it was gone.

Just another thought too it has occurred to me that M$ have been pushing Outlook too and maybe the 10 upgrade has got it so corrupted it will not let you download past mail from WLM.

For example on my secondary laptop I had to install Outlook from Microsoft to be able to use some Samsung software and when I used my main email account as a secondary mail source it would not download the past WLM mail of any sort. The strange thing is I have to login into Outlook using my main email account as the username

I'm sure I don't have to tell any of you if you Google "WLM an unknown error occurred" there will be a list of numerous hits of people having the same problem.

People with this problem, often need to delete multiple messages or entire folders. That error appears because WLM only thinks it has that/those message(s), but actually that message is nowhere to be found in the Windows email folders. The message exists no longer, but WLM still shows it as being in its own folders and you simply cannot delete it using the normal procedure.

I did try the trick of dragging to Delete folder, but ran into 'unknown error' again and message did not move.

One thing I touched upon briefly was finding 'recovery' folders in WLM that I never had before. I failed to tell you that there were 4 such folders reading "Recovery 2-17-16 ....". This would represent 4 email accounts and the date I upgraded to W10. After recovery from W10 and starting email each of the accounts received a small amount of messages as normal. Then, suddenly, the Inbox number took off like I was at a telethon! In my mind (no proof) these 4 recovery folders were then adding on.

In any event I am back to a point I'm satisfied with.
