Solved windows live usb?

i'm currently running installed ubuntu from my external hdd that i use for backups as my drive in my laptop died due to rough handling by a relative im looking into getting the seagate 500gb hybrid drive as a replacement to the manufacturer provided one. Frankly, i dont want to use my external hdd in this way because i think it might shorten its life.

i would like to know if there is a way to run windows 7 as a live os, i have done some research and the answer seems to be no. if not i am aware of windows 8's "windows to go" feature. i do not have access to a enterprise machine and am not sure if i can install w8 enterprise on my wd my passport without reformatting it (idk if its ntfs or some other format). i would even be happy with running xp at this point. i just am having some issues with finding linux equivalents to some softwares that i use frequently (greenshot, getting my logitech b910 to work, feeling like a fish out of water in linux)

im aware that this is a windows forum so i wont go to much into my issues with ubuntu. i just would like to know what is my best bet for windows that i can run from a wd my passport without erasing my backups.

2.) Other possible solutions:

VMWARE virtual machine running windows xp, vista, 7, or 8. You could store the virtual machine entirely on the external drive.

i'm trying wine now, it seems that bluestacks doesnt work with wine. i was aware of vm's before this though. i guess its my best option now to run native but its slightly taxing on my system since it is a laptop and my hdd is having to go through a usb 2.0 connection
