Hiya - please help!

I've got Windows Mail working almost perfectly on Win7. Only problem is, when I try to set the mailto: protocol, Windows Mail isn't there to choose from just Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird (which I don't want to use via mailto: as they are only my throw away web mail accounts). Can anyone point me in the direction to add it?

I thought it might be in control panel, but I don't have the "show all control panel" icon in the folder.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, upgraded from Vista.

If there is no work around, I might just have to set Thunderbird up to send mail from my account and leave Windows Mail to handle the incoming and outgoing mail without using mailto:

Help!

Which guide did you follow for installing Windows Mail on 7?

Copied it from my laptop copy of Vista, deleted the original, pasted the vista, and pinned it to the taskbar.

Well I had a look and they are already pointing towards WinMail so I can't see why it won't open up the mailto: in WinMail but in Thunderbird instead. Very puzzling.

Is Thunderbird registered as the default mail application?

Yes at the moment because the option for WinMail isn't there :(

I'm guessing that is the reason - if you have Thunderbird registered, it will take all mailto commands. If you go into default programs and remove the mailto association from Thunderbird, then reboot and try that registry hack, it might work. Then again, it might not...

Already tried it, and nope it still won't open with WinMail. What I don't get is why when WinMail is still in the registry as being the one to open with, it will still open with Thunderbird (and without TB being installed, opens with WLM).

Probably because there is more than one registry entry that must be made.

Ah, right. What should I be looking for, adding or editing in this case?

I have no idea, as I've never attempted to register a program that has not been installed. It may not be possible at all. I suggest you use the link I posted as a starting point to find other guides on using Mail with Windows 7. Then, ask those people for assistance with registering the application.
