I am using Windows Mail with Win7. It was a struggle but I seem to have everything working except Firefox SendLink and Mailto--it opens Windows Mail (the default) but just the Inbox, not a compose message. Clicking on an email address within an email body works fine (it brings up a compose window). This may be a pure FF problem but I have tried FF 3.6.25, 8.0, and 9.01. I have another computer with winmail and win7 and FF3.6.25 that works fine, and I cannot find any significant differences in the Registry or in FF about:config. The Sendlink issue has been posted to Mozilla by others for some time but I do not see any answers.

Just in case anyone here knows a Windows setting I may have overlooked. Any help would be appreciated.

I've got similar problems with "mailto" links in Opera working with GMail... basically that's unsolvable... and quite honestly you're better protected with the eMail client in Windows Live Essentials than the older Vista Mail client...

Obviously in your case the link is pointing at the executable, not the new message command...

Solved by Firefox Options

Actually, I had another problem, the mailto: links in Firefox also opened the Inbox, instead of a Compose window. I have resolved both of them--here is how:

  • Under Firefox->Tools->Options->Applications->mailto there is a drop-down box which (for me) selected [Windows Mail]. However, there was another selection: [Windows Mail (default)]. When I made this selection, both of my problems went away.
  • I don't really understand it though, because there is an option called (Application details) and both of them read:
    This application is located at
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe
Nothing about email parameters like subject or body.
Bear in mind that I had already managed to make Windows Mail the default in Windows 7.
