Hi, I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and Windows Mail. My old drive was not in good shape and could not be left connected, so I had my Outlook Express email stored to a My Docs location, which is were they sit in an .eml file format.

1. I have tried to have Windows Mail import them - no luck there

2. I have tried to drag and drop the file from exsisting folder to a new Windows Mail folder - it opens the file, but in a strange unreadable format - no luck there

What do I do to be able to access and read my old OE emails?

Frustrated!

Let's get something clear first .....

1. I assume that you have upgraded your XP to Win 7 ? Yes ?
Or, you have a brand new machine running Win 7 ?

2. XP machines run Outlook Express which is part of the OS.
Vista machines run Windows Mail which is part of the OS.
(The above 2 are NOT interchangeable.)

Windows 7 does NOT have e-mail client included in the OS.

3. Windows 7 does NOT support Windows Mail, unless you used the " tweak " to install Windows Mail.

4. Windows 7 will accept Windows Live Mail, but you have to install it.

Now, please clarify the above for us.
Exactly which e-mail client do you have in your Windows 7 machine, Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail ?

Hi Steven Pro,

It is an XP machine that was running Windows Vista, with Outlook Express as its email
I have Windows 7 - 32 bit OS and a new 2TB hard drive
The eMail program says Microsoft Outlook, which as I understand is Windows Mail (Windows Live Mail is Hotmail, yes?)

Thank you, your help is much appreciated :-)

No, you did not read my reply carefully. You can NOT have Vista running Outlook Express.
If you have Vista, you have Windows Mail.
If you have XP, you have Outlook Express.

You still have not answered this question...
Do you have a new computer come pre-installed with Windows 7, or do you have an XP computer and you or someone helped you upgraded it to Windows 7 ?

No, it's not a new computer, it is an XP machine, that has had a new hard drive installed and upgraded to Windows 7 at the same time.

Many Thanks :-)

Thank you.
That still leave one question to be answered......

You cannot be using Windows Mail.

Are you then using Windows Live Mail ? NO. It is not a Hotmail.
Windows Live Mail is introduced by Microsoft (3 years ago ) as a replacement of Windows Mail.

I am afraid you have more issues than I can handle via internet exchanges.

How did you get your Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 ?
Is it a paid version or a " trial " version ?

Anyway, I am giving you the link to tutorial regarding imporing Outlook Express messages to Microsoft Outlook 2007.

Any further question will have to be answered by someone else.

Hi Seven Pro, Please accept my sincere apologies. I checked with my system provider yesterday and I have been mistaken in what I have told you up to this point, I am so sorry! The following however is in fact correct:

My PC was upgraded from a Windows Vista machine that had Windows Mail (which apparently was the new Outlook Express?) as its email program
  • It has had a new hard drive installed with a paid for genuine Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Outlook installed
  • The emails remain in a my docs folder as .eml files
  • Can the .eml files be moved to my Microsoft Office Outlook???
With apologies and thanks for persevering

No, it opens up an "Import to Window Contacts" window, with choices for what type of file to import, ie: CSV, LDIF or Windows Address Book File (Outlook Express Contacts)

Regardless of which type of file is selected, the iporter doent recognize the the file at all..

Ok, did you export the messages from OE to .eml or it is just the raw .eml files ?
