Windows Mail

How to Reinstate Windows Mail in Windows 7

   Warning
Microsoft no longer supports Windows Mail, aka WinMail. It's recommended you use another well known supported email client. This Tutorial is for Advanced users who importantly have the Technical Ability to make the changes, have backups of everything including your OS, and to be your own tech support for WinMail going forward. If you decide to complete this tutorial you accept the fact that you are using WinMail as-is. It might be necessary to uninstall other email clients to resolve any WinMail conflicts in some environments. Understand it's likely that new OS updates from Microsoft will break WinMail's operation, and to fix make it necessary to rerun the tutorial again to reinstate it. With those things in mind, this tutorial was written so that you can rerun it without affecting WinMail user data.
Please see this Errata (Bug List) post before you install, to be aware of the current information about known issues using WinMail within Windows 7, these issues are programmatic and in most cases cannot be resolved by this tutorial, and will never be fixed.

Having said all of that disclaimer, if you have the technical ability, and can put up with the annoying minor byproduct bugs, then like so many of us still enjoy using WinMail on Windows 7 ...ymmv!

   Tip
As of January, 2025, the instructions given here supersede all other instructions given in forthcoming older posts. Realize some of the posts that follow are over 16 years old, and many of the link pointers within have become mislinked over time, many of the files or information within them is outdated, incomplete, or superseded with more accurate information - and so be careful. However you can always be sure that the latest info from all research is incorporated into this tutorial post, and its downloads are the latest available. This post is continuously kept up-to-date, and so..
...Always refer to this Tutorial post for the very latest updated information

This is the 4th iteration of the Windows 7, WinMail tutorial.

The process of this tutorial Will Not work to reinstate WinMail on Windows 8/10 !
Windows 8/10 users please go Here

Start here
  1. Download tutorial package TutReWinMail.zip

    Download

  2. Extract the TutReWinMail.zip into your user Downloads folder
    • Note: Be sure once extracted this is the address of the ''TutReWinMail'' folder:
    • C:\Users\username\Downloads\TutReWinMail... ... (if it's not there please put it there)
  3. Navigate to your user Downloads\TutReWinMail folder to be sure the above is correct.
    • (..if you need more verbose install instructions to follow, download this WinMail Local Tutorial.zip)
    • Advanced Users can proceed below:
(..log in for Full Access, being able to get support, remove ads, like, and even to post, etc..)
Advanced Users: ..use this easy excellent overview of the steps in the local tutorial:
  • Open an Administrator Command Prompt. (screenshot showing in Administrator mode)
  • copy/paste this line into the command prompt: cd %USERPROFILE%\Downloads\TutReWinMail\
  • Your command prompt must now be showing you are at That Same Folder Address ..which contains the tutorial files that the batch file in the next step executes programs and copies files specifically from that folder address - if it's not there the batch file will fail since it cannot find what it needs!
  • Next type in either winmail32 or win64mail <matching OS bit, to interactively process These Next Steps
  • If you've finished to the bottom as shown in last screenshot, restart your machine (sets registry)
  • Create a shortcut from WinMail.exe to your Desktop
  • Open WinMail - it may prompt you one (or both) of These Two Notices ..click yes, and okay.
  • They now should be already set, but you can manually check/set at any time These Default Settings
  • That's pretty much all there is to it, and from here you setup the rest of the Windows Mail client (aka: WinMail) as normal within its various tab menus for Accounts, Options, Layout, etc, etc, to suit your individual needs.
  • Lastly, but should be the First thing you do, is to Create A WinMail Backup (new version) ..Go to this next link and when you get there scroll down to the heading: Backup/Restore Procedures for further instructions.
   Information
See How to open an elevated Administrator Command Prompt
Important: The exact text provided by the tutorial must be entered into the Administrator Command Prompt.
Hint: to avoid typos, copy/paste the entire line containing the command into the Command Prompt window.
Also see: How to Enable Copy to Clipboard from the Windows 7 Command Prompt

Every effort has been made to make this a step-by-step process, however, it is beyond the scope of a single tutorial to provide information on every command or concept. Search the Main Tutorial Section if you need greater detail on a concept or command presented in this tutorial.

Good luck, and long live WinMail

Windows 7 SP1 breaks Windows Mail.

Hi Brit, I've been using WLM for some time now and won't be going back to Windows Mail. When you say that it breaks it, does it put it back in the original state as it was prior to us getting it to work. I'm mostly wanting it to restore TrustedInstaller as owner with all the permissions that go with it. I can do it manually, but so far, it hasn't meant that much to me to do it,lol. I assume SP1 will also break Wmp 11 for those who have downgraded?

It simply doesn't open - same thing that happened a while back with an update. Probably as simple as replacing that key msoe.dll, but am too busy check at the moment as one of the SP1 installs is failing each time and I'm trying to troubleshoot. Coincidentally its the only one that is x86.

The only reason I don't use Windows Live Mail is, as I have 10 email accounts, I can't stand the way WLM insists that I have to have 10 inboxes and 10 of every other folder.

I was right...thought I should find time to sort it out straight away. Simply replacing the msoe.dll with the old version does the trick.

Hi Ex_Brit. Interesting, but makes perfect sense since SP1 includes and updates with all previous updates. I assume it must be detecting the msoe.dll as needing updating and replaces it. The normal Windows updater does not do this, provided the msoe.dll is modified after the culprit KB update has been installed, and left in place.

Some who manually update, prefer to remove the KB update, and mark it as not to be shown as an update in the future. They then modify the msoe.dll correctly assuming the KB update will never be downloaded again. Obvioulsy in this scenario, however, the SP1 does detect and update the msoe.dll which totally stops WinMail.

Like Greg S I'm also using WinLiveMail and have been for some time now. However, I keep WinMail active as there are still some glitches in the old WinLiveMail and the latest version. Like yourself though, I find it irksome that I can't prevent all email accounts as being shown, even though I only have two. The best I can do to alleviate this is to use "Quick Views" in the left hand side window, and configure it to show all emails. I then reduce the other accounts to display only as the name of the account. To retain this display set up, I have found it necessary to highlight the title "Quick View" title before closing WLM.

Re glitches, in the old WLM version, which I use, when I create an email and add images in-line to the main body of text, and then send them to my bulk mailing list, the images are lost. I can work around this by sending it as a one off to my own email address, which when it's received retains the images. I then forward the copy in the inbox to the bulk mailing addresses and the images are then retained.

In the latest WLM version, while there's no problem with in-line images, it is not possible to format the background with an image, sound or color. It can be worked around by creating a new email in WinMail and adding the desired background formatting, then saving it to desktop, or wherever. Since WLM is the default email client, if the email is then re-opened it will be done by WLM and still retain the background formatting. This is a very cumbersome work around. I've contacted M$ via the WLM forum re this issue, but they are non-commital.

However, since I haven't used the latst WLM for some time now, maybe they've now added this feature in the interim? Can anyone confirm or deny?

Yep, have to agree with that! Leaves a bit to be desired. Who knows, maybe a miracle will happen and M$ will actually listen to what the consumers want! Then again, maybe I'll win lotto! :D

Windows Mail not in Default Programs List

The title says it. I have windows mail working well. The third computer I've done it on. However the right click>send to Mail recipient does nothing. The *click* disappears into lala land. Of course I tried changing the default on "mail recipient" from 'unknown program' to 'windows mail'. That would open Windows Mail, but not a new letter and, of course, didn't import the file I was trying to send. And then I could only undo that with a system restore.

I had (have?) hopes that by going to: default programs> set program access and computer defaults> custom> choose default e-mail program> Windows Mail (it does show HERE!)> and lastly enable access to this program, I would finally make Windows Mail fully functional.

Alas, I may never know. The "enable access to this program" check box is greyed out and when I tell it "OK" it resets back to "Use my current e-mail program" (Which IS Windows mail).

So, bottom line, How can I get my Right Click (on some file)> Send To> Email Recipient to open a letter ready to send in Windows Mail?????

Hi John, unfortunately I don't have any ready answers on this. I'm running both WinLiveMail and WinMail on Windows 7 Ult Retail version, and both mail programs will execute this command, from the one that is set to default. Default can be set from within the program via Internet Options under the General tab. When WinMail is first run, it should auto ask if you want to set it as default.

It might be that your original Windows Mail folder in progam files had become corrupted? Do you have access to a virgin copy of this WinMail folder? It might be worth replacing all existing files in this folder and running the tutorial from the top. Or at least running system file check with the following command in the Run box: sfc /scannow.

Just to cover all bases, did you update the msoe.dll file in this folder with the current one in the tutorial to counteract the effects of the KB978542 update? And finally, if you're running 64bit, I assume you modified the msoe.dll file in the normal program files and not in the 32bit Program files(x86)?

It might depend on the machine you have it on? Some laptops have encountered problems that seemed unique to the machine, possibly due to a BIOS issue.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Cheers PB :(

Hi, now Windows mail can be tricky.

Here is a reg tweak that should fully allow Winmail to have all access. just one thing, some users noted that machines with Win mail enabled might have issues applying SP1 pack.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Copy and past in notepad and save as Winmaildefault.reg

Double click, to add to reg reboot and try it.

I wonder whether anyone could assist please. I had Windows Mail working perfect on my 32 bit but windows home premium. With SP1 about to be launch I thought I might as well reformat and install 64 bit windows 7 home premium.

I just installed Windows 7 64 bit HP (NO updates) and having problems installing it.
I know I must use the correct Program Files>Windows Mail for 64 bit, but do I have to move the windows mail folder from vista 64 bit or can I use the vista 32 bit. If I need to install the 64 bit vista mail could anyone please help me and tell me where I can get it from.

In the program files>windows mail I notice there is not the file for start up to sent a short cut to desk top.

IF I get this sorted I appreciate I will probably have to change the msoe.dll file when I update.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I do not really want to go back to 32 bit windows 7
Thank You

You would have to follow the steps in the tutorial exactly as stated. For a 64-bit system use the 64-bit msoe.dll etc.

I would wait until after installing SP1 if I were you as either the SP installer will balk at the WM modification or it will at least over-write it.

It is most likely simply that, try it. If not go through the tutorial steps again.

It would be great if someone could make and release a full installer setup for both x86 and x64 versions with a setup creation tool such as Inno Setup which will install Windows Mail and create the the necessary program shortcuts into the start menu and onto the desktop and enter the needed registry entries automatically.

You would have to follow the steps in the tutorial exactly as stated. For a 64-bit system use the 64-bit msoe.dll etc.

I would wait until after installing SP1 if I were you as either the SP installer will balk at the WM modification or it will at least over-write it.

No problem doing that but do I need the Complete Vista 64 Bit Windows Mail Folder or can I use whats already there in the Win 7 64 bit Program Files>Windows Mail but just change 64-bit msoe.dll?

Also does it matter that the file to send a short cut to the desktop is not in Windows 7 64 Bit Mail

EDIT: What a dickhead I am, I never read the instructions properly (despite reading them about 6 times); I did not change ALL the hidden extensions etc

ALL working now, THANK YOU

Do I have to move the windows mail folder from vista 64 bit or can I use the vista 32 bit.

In the program files>windows mail I notice there is not the file for start up to sent a short cut to desk top.
1. You should NOT move either the 32 or 64 bit Vista Windows Mail folder into your Windows 7 operating system. Doing so will cause problems further down the track and stop WinMail from working.

2. The only Vista file needed is the msoe.dll and a download button will provide you with the 64bit version of this file in Step 4, Page 1 of this tutorial.

3. Re creating a shortcut to the desktop to run WinMail, exe ... if you have done the first 3 Steps of the tutorial correctly, the latter part of Step 4 tells you how to send the WinMail.exe file, (from the Windows Mail folder in the 64bit Program Files), to the desktop as a shortcut.

Normally the WinMail.exe file is invisible, but executing Step 2 in the tutorial makes it visible. It Step 2 fails to make it visible, then use Footnote 4 to make it visible.

Update: Ooopps! Sorry. The edit in your last post just above this one was not visible when I posted this reply. PB

I really do not see the requirement of Windows Mail. If you have Win7 then it is much more worthwhile to try Windows Live Mail 2011 that comes with the Windows Live Essentials Package. Or better, use Mozilla Thunderbird, which is much more lightweight....

But whatever, the tutorial's great !!!
