I went to play an mp3, and the standard windows media player setup came up, where you choose recommended or custom. Its been ages since ive ran that first setup, and ive used wmp for ages in between. What causes it to come up again? I had a large amount of updates from windows update recently, was it something to do with that?

That happened to me too - just minutes after applying the latest round of updates. In my case, one of those updates reset all of my media file associations to point to Windows Media Player. I use WMP, but not by default. I ended up re-installing K-Lite codec pack (with Media Player Classic) to let that install redo all of my media file associations.

I glanced at the updates, but I did not see which one was responsible for barfing those associations and resetting WMP to the first run state.

Could be, I just opened my WMP from the Taskbar [without any media selected] and it prompts to choose Settings and I hadn't used it for several days.
