Would you be able to post one screen shot with VLC playing a video perfectly and WMP with those red dots you mentioned earlier?

Also I'm not quite sure what is wrong with the picture above? Is it to do with those tiny dots that are vertically pointing down the screen?

I myself prefer to use VLC for playing all of my video files, but if you still want to fix WMP you could try this:

  1. If you have a codec pack installed, uninstall it. Restart your computer then reinstall it again.
  2. If you don't have a codec pack installed, you can download one from:
Windows 7 Codecs Pack for Windows Media Player WMP12 and Media Center

Note: Codecs are special instructions that help WMP play video files that you wouldn't be able to play normally. This might help you play some avi videos and some of your camcorder videos.

Okay, I'm not really sure what could be causing you to have lines/dots on your video playback in WMP.

I do have some other suggestions you could try that might help you :).

  1. Update your graphics card driver to the latest version.
  2. Make sure Direct X is installed and working properly.
  3. Try disabling the aero effect (try the Windows 7 basic theme).
  4. Try watching a video at a lower screen resolution.

Any one else got any ideas? :geek:

I agree, you shouldn't have to pay that much to get a problem like this fixed.

I don't really have any more ideas sorry :(.

When did you first start noticing that these red/white dots started appearing in WMP?
Can you remember any important tasks that your computer processed before the problem?
(e.g. a important Windows Update, updated your video card driver)

Basically anything that might have been updated that could have caused the problem.
If there was any important updates, try a system restore to the date before the problem occurred.

Here are a couple of ways you can try to control those artifacts.

If you have Windows Aero enabled, disable it by using one of the basic themes. Test WMP.

If they are still there leave the Aero setting disabled then go into your VLC controls and change the video output mode of VLC from its present setting to Windows GDI video output. Test WMP.

If you prefer to run Aero, you can then try re-enabling Aero then test WMP. If the artifacts still remain change the VLC setting to DirectX, DirectX3D or even OpenGL. Worst case, try the XP settings in the Quote below.

Ignore the fact that this Quote mentions XP, Vista, and that you are not having problems with your VLC player, there is something going on between your graphics card, the players, and DirectX:
Why does VLC only give black, white or garbled (or other visual errors) video output?

Usually the problem lies in display adapter drivers. If you are too scared to update your display adapter drivers, you can change VLC settings to make video work. If you are using Windows XP or older the easiest fix is usually to disable Accelerated video output/Overlay video output which can be found first opening Tools -> Preferences and then choosing Video. After you have unticked the Accelerated video output, press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled. Image about Overlay video output setting

If disabling Overlay video output doesn't help, then the next step is to change video output module. Open Tools -> Preferences (set Show Settings to All) and then choosing Video -> Output module. There are multiple output modules you can use. For Windows XP and younger you can try DirectX 3D, DirectX, OpenGL and Windows GDI video output modules.

With Windows Vista DirectX and Windows GDI output modules will disable Aero so if you want to use Aero, please use DirectX 3D (should be default). Remember to press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled. Image about video output modules setting

If none of this helps you will need to look into updating your Display adapter drivers. ATI Radeon HD 5750 Graphics

You will also need to check if your OS is fully updated including The latest version of DirectX

I suspect there is something going on with your graphics card and DirectX.

Try uninstalling VLC player, all codec packs and test WMP. Many codecs can cause more problems so I use VLC to play media WMP can't. (I saw no problem with the video shot.)

If you still have the issue after a full clean install I would suspect your graphics driver (as suggested by Anak) or a failing GPU. VLC seems to have the ability to give more acceptable playback them WMP.

Britton, that is a good suggestion if they've been re-installed, to remove all third-party codecs to force the use of the ones native to WMP and VLC. I went with the premiss that zebdog had not added any since his/her re-install of the operating system (OS).

They are difficult to pick out with the dark background - it took me a while - but there are problems with the video shot, I highlighted some here:

wmp art.JPG

The darker areas show series of vertical 4 white dots/hashes and the lighter areas series of vertical and horizontal red dots/hashes, they are all through the shot and I only highlighted the most obvious.

I believe if the resolution was improved they would stand out better.
