Windows Old Question

Howdy folks, I guess I should have presented myself first but that'll come eventually.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and recently had a system crash. I got a blue screen stating ''hard error'' and my system was promptly restarted. Startup repair tried to do his things but it failed(and did an endless loop in trying to do so). I couldn't boot in safe mode, I couldn't do anything. I resorted to reinstalling Windows 7 using my CD. I took the custom installation rather than the upgrade because the upgrade would essentially lead to the endless startup repair loot. Now, after everything was done, it's said my old Windows is still on the computer under the file name ''Windows old'', I checked and it is indeed there. Wouldn't there be a way to reinstall Windows old? I really don't want to be forced to reinstall all my drivers and updates. Thanks.

Hello Juub, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you were to restore the installation back using Window.old, you would have the same issues again before you reinstalled.

It would be best to bite the bullet, and reinstall your drivers and updates to avoid the issues you had before. Afterwards, you could delete the Windows.old folder if you like to regain the HDD space it's using.

Mmmh, that's what I thought too. The issue I had was the infamous BSOD(blue screen of death) and I was wondering if I couldn't find a way around it now that I can access my Windows.

Well, if you do not have the BSOD anymore, then you already found a way around it.

It's really not worth trying to recover the installation with the Windows.old folder. It usually ends badly, and you would end up doing a clean install anyways. If you have files inside the Windows.old folder that you want, then you could copy and paste them back. Progams and drivers will still have to be reinstalled though.

Alright, thanks a lot. Guess I'll do that. Ugh, reinstalling all the drivers will be a pain. That'll teach me not to back up my stuff. 175GB of data lost. Ain't as bad as I thought.

Reinstalling drivers shouldn't be a pain. They are all on one page on your manufacturer's website. It should take at most 45 min.

One of the first things I always do when I get a new computer is to go to the manfacturer's support site to download and save all the drivers and applications bundled with the computer software.

You never know............

I'd do the manufacturer's stuff but the problem is that my system is more than 2 years old and the guarantee expired 2 months ago. Unless the guarantee plays no role in that...

Guarantee has nothing to do with going to the site for drivers ...
They are there to support certain model.

I did a good job signing up to thise site. Should have done it a long time ago. I'm sure I'll learn a lot.

Kind of a noobish question but how do I know the manufacturer? I go into ''System'' and I still don't see it.

The manufacturer would be the same as the brand of the computer. For example, HP, Gateway, Dell, etc..... It should be on your computer case somewhere if it's a store bought computer.

If you could give us the brand and model # of your computer, we could help look up your driver download page for it.
