I upgraded from XP to Windows today. This folder has alot of crap in it, can i just delete it or is there a process? Stuff like games and other programs that i will not use. (as i will just reinstall if i need to) Please help if someone can. Thanks

Welcome to the Seven Forums

Windows.old is just created to store all your old files from your old Windows installation. If you have everything you need from this, such as old files and stuff, then just delete it and free up some disk space.

Nope, it's just basically a backup folder for your XP installation and won't affect your Windows 7 installation at all if you delete it.

Hmm, I have a Windows.old folder and I did a clean install. I imagine that it was created after doing system restore, but I'm not certain about that.

Clean installs aren't that clean unless you boot from the DVD.

Even a Custom "clean" install from the desktop saves the entire OS in windows.old.

Boot from the DVD to do a clean install to formatted metal, even with an Upgrade disk.

There are also 2 hidden folders with a ~Q or something, but they should be listed first on your install drive. I think this was discussed in a tutorial, but I can't find it right now.

In my case, I did a clean install from a flash drive on an empty harddrive. So windows.old couldn't have come from that.

I upgraded from Vista to Win7, so I have no Windows.old folder at all.
