Hello all
I am going to install windows 7 over my current windows xp install on the same partition.

what i am wondering is, does the windows.old folder store everything or, does it only store some things.

eg. i have heaps of photos and stuff in my pictures and i want to keep them for windows 7. will they be accessible in windows.old?

and i have a folder just in the root directory of the drive called stuff that simply has crap in it like movies and well, stuff really. will it stay in the root untouched or will it go to the windows.old or be deleted? if so should i move this folder to my documents or something?

just wondering. thanks for the help :D

Windows.old is a last resort for lost documents (not programs). If you use winows easy transfer and have all of your personal doucments etc, backe up. You will not need windows.old.

In fact, you should choose the clean install (format, when given the choice) and you will not even have the windows.old folder. Everyone heare agrees clean is the best method.

In summary, use windows easy transfer, which you get from MS and back up every thing that you need or want on an external.

Programs must be reinstalled using a CD/DVD or downloade from the net.

Good luck and enjoy

Hi and welcome
1-some things settings, and prefs.
2-back them up, they dont need to be installed and win 7 shoould do it, BUT they are your pics and if you value them.
3-stuff should be safe, but if you value it.

I assume you are going to upgrade instead of the recommended clean install. You will import any problems you current OS has.

Hope this helps

thanks for the help everyone,

I think i might just have to back everything up and then do a fresh clean install, because it sounds a bit risky to expect windows.old to save me

I was just hoping to not have to back up 400gb :P

cheers

You can't count on that. We help with failed installs here every day.

Always back up files, especially before any installation, reinstallation or partitioning operation.

If you don't have an external drive, back them up over your network to another computer.
