Windows opens "Camera" .jpgs with Windows Photo Viewer--How to stop?

All my .jpg files are associated with IrFanView, but when the .jpg is located on a camera connected via USB e.g. my iPhone, double-clicking that .jpg opens it in Windows Photo Viewer, which I hate because it usually gets the orientation wrong.

Why does Windows insist on opening Camera jpgs with a different program than the File Association normally dictates? How to change this behavior?

Hi,
As far as I've noticed you're viewing the files in explorer and they are temporary files until you install them some where in my pictures...

Hi,
Had a fun afternoon looking into this.
It appears the setting you want is in autoplay but to default to IrfanView (IV) is impossible.
The work around I found and tried, is to rename the Windows Photo Viewer folder.
There are 2 of them, 1 in Programs Files and 1 in Program Files (x86).
What I did was to delete the W off the name, so I am left with indows Photo Viewer (in case of problems I can always put the W back)
Now when I open a JPG (BMP, etc ) from a phone or camera it opens with my default IV.
Hope that helps
Hedge

Ha, ha! Yeah, I'll bet!

:D

Brilliant, Hedge. Now why didn't I think to try that? I found it necessary to reboot to Safe Mode cuz Windows wouldn't let me change the folder names, which I changed to Windowx... just to be different. But it works!

I looked at registry entries for WPV and they are legion. Someone at MS must know a more elegant way to do this, and I haven't tried yet to see if WPV will actually still run (seems to me I used it for something once though it escapes me now) but in any case I'm happy for the workaround, though I will leave this thread as Unsolved at least for the time being to see if anyone else chimes in.

Many thanks for spending your afternoon on this! Believe me I had spent a lot more time to no good effect than to frustrate myself!

:)

@ maxseven,
As a side note, inside the WPV folder is ImagingDevices.exe renaming this has the same affect.
Don't know if there is a default in the registry for this exe
As it says in it's title this is a sort of default for most devices(phone, camera, etc) this includes a scanner (If you have one)
That may be where problems might occur (I have third party software for mine,so I don't really know)
just elaborating a bit

Hedge

Edit:- Safe Mode didn't occur to me, I went the Take Ownership route

To All,
This is not a fix or a workaround really, SFC puts the WPV folder and files back in place
So still looking for solution

Thanks for the tip. I don't run SFC except on the rarest of occasions so will try to keep this in mind.

Hi,
Windows does this because if a file opened in an photo editor people would try to edit the files when they are not installed on the machine permanently.
Which would probably error out or most editing tools would be grayed out and not accessible causing another question
Why can't I edit my photos ?

Hi all,
Just a bit more to the saga,
Now with WPV back after SFC, (had a strange blue screen on start up pre desktop)
plugged in the device and a double click would open WPV, but a right click and open uses IV
