now thats not bad.... assuming the pricing structure over here in the Uk is based on the exchange rate... there is £90 difference between HP and Prof, an upgrade should only cost £40 a saving of £50

Microsoft offering Windows 7 upgrade deals

One of the Microsoft's best kept secrets, though not an intentional one, is the fact that it's quite easy to upgrade a PC from one version of Windows 7 to another.

Computers running Windows 7 have all of the features of the high-end Ultimate edition built in. A feature called Windows Anytime Upgrade lets users buy a code and unlock new features, a process that the software maker says can be done in just 10 minutes. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn't had much luck making users aware of or interested in such upgrades.

The software maker is hoping to change that with a promotion that starts Sunday. Certain retailers will be offering those buying a new PC the opportunity to buy a discounted upgrade to a higher-end version of Windows 7. In the U.S., there are two offers, though not all retailers will be offering both.

I would be tempted to upgrade 7 Starter to Home Premium on my Eee PC netbook, but it looks like the deal is only available a.) at retailers, and b.) with the purchase of a new PC. Bummer...

It's a temptation for people to go out and buy a new pc for the additional features in the higher priced editions as well as stimuling new pc sales! Something has to regenerate a slow economy.

This sucks. I took a look at it, and it seems no matter where you start from, the upgrade price is the same. e.g. <previous OS> to Win 7 Ultimate @ same price currently. :/

The discounts only apply to a select list of upgrades. I wouldn't imagine they would discount everything at this time with having only been out for 5-6 months. Later when W8 is near beta you would expect to see more.
