Windows search can't find files named with just numbers.

Hello, 1st post, glad to be here.

I am having a problem that I find odd and something I never noticed with Windows Search in the Win 7 environment. I have users who name files strictly with numbers. No letters, just straight numbers. They're part drawings made by drafting software (i.e. Solidworks, AutoCAD). I don't believe this has been a problem before Win 7 As I believe XPs search did find these types of files search strings with out issue.

I've attempted to mess around with the Indexing under Folder Options and the Search tab. That didn't seem to help. I also did a google search for the topic and found third party software but where I work at it would to be a tough time selling this to management to allow me to install.

I have level 1 tech support experience and anything with command line and me usually is a very slow process but if any of you happen to know a way to get this type of search to cooperate without third party software i'd greatly appreciate the input. Thank you!

Hello CentralPA and welcome to Seven Forums.

I just tried this and Windows Search found files with numbers only.
I don't usually use Windows Search and have indexing turned off.

Welcome to Sevenforums, Central.

Have you tried searching like this *34534* ? Asterisk is used as a wild card. Also, you can try to narrow it down to file type with *34534* type:txt for example. Or if you know the folder its in %folder%\34534.

I forgot to mention that these files are on a networked drive. I believe the SYSTEM account is assigned full access rights.

David,
that seems to work for a local PC but what about a network drive?

Gator,
I had tried these tags and didn't have any luck.

I'm testing on a Home system, so I can't test on a corporate network drive :(
At least you now see it works locally, and the issue is searching a network drive.
I use HomeGroup for file sharing, and I doubt that is what you use ...

You might get better help in the SF Network & Sharing sub-forum:
Network & Sharing - Windows 7 Help Forums

You can request this thread be moved there by clicking on the "Report Post" red triangle in the upper right of any post, and ask that this thread be moved.

I can do this for you, but if you're gonna be a frequent SF member, might as well learn it now :)
If the Admins disagree with me, I'm sure they will give better advice ;)

hth,
David

hth,
David

Thanks a lot for your help David. I will move it to the network sharing forum as I believe you're probably right about it having more to do with it searching a network share then a local PC. I'll see if I can do this myself. Thanks again for your help.

Thinking back to this I remember that this was a major issue a few years ago, (though have not been involved much with Client Server systems recently) - when Win7 was first rolled out.

The basic solution was to set up windows search 4 on the server to index the files there rather than on the local system - this may be a solution for your application especially if you are using an older server release.

Users will also need read access at least to view the files on the server, ( I assume these files are in the user folder on the server so should not be a security issue)
